3D Data Visualization- Science 10 Honours

Explanation

  • The data we had gathered were discussing child care centers in Canada . We decided that we should make a map of Canada split up by the provinces, that then we used the height to represent how many  childcare centers there were, per 100 kids (1 cm= I childcare center) We used monopoly houses to symbolize childcare centers. The ones that were for the majority licensed were green, and unlicensed were red. We used  different colors to represent the different ages of the kids attending childcare centers. Yellow= younger than 1, red= 1-3, purple= ages 4-5 that aren’t in school, blue= ages 4-5 that are attending school, and we had brown for the ages that there was no data for. And finally we had made little flags that had the percentage of how much the provinces were struggling with finding safe childcare centers.

Core competency

Critical thinking

While completing this project, I was working on my critical thinking. This could be while gathering data, creating a prototype, and even writing this reflection. I had to use this competencies to gather information and make connections with different data sets. I had to sort out useful information, but also recognize what would not be necessary for what I was working on. Having the liberty to chose whatever inspired me, made it possible for me to highlight my critical thinking on my own. I had to be strategic on what was the main idea and not get side tracked by adding to many details that would hide the original idea.

Being someone that has a better understanding in math and science related problems, finding the data and explaining it, was a piece of cake. But because this has to be a 3d data visualization, that means ill have to step out of my comfort zone. I was in charge of drawing the map of Canada and dividing the provinces. And when I tell you it was a struggle, it really was. It took me at least five tries, and it still was not what I wanted, but I’ve learned that there are more important things too worry about and not all the little lakes in Nunavut. It was interesting seeing how one piece of data that is just a simple bar graph, could turn into an intricate map of Canada with different heights and colors, and still have all the same information.

I can statements

I understand how to  gather data and show it in a different way

-> During this project I collected different data, and then made a 3d visualization using the same data.

I can work with others while still assuring that my ideas are showed as well

-> As I did this project with a partner, I can work collaborative and come up with ideas together. But at the same time. I can show my ideas as well.

I am willing to step out of my comfort zone

-> While drawing and painting during this project, there were times when it felt so hard. But in doing so I stepped out of my comfort zone , and still made great quality work.

Reflection

In your post write to explain how you figured out what equation to use. Did you have any challenges? any aha moments? Did you get help? Did you use any strategies? How did this assignment help you understand more about functions?

  • Looking at the examples Ms. Hubbard showed us for examples, I was overwhelmed. We were looking at all these amazing Postcards, that looked so complex and perfect. I had no clue how in the world I was going to this.  I’m also the most un=artistic person ever so I couldn’t rely on my art skills to help me. I started of my project by picking my picture. Who knew that picking an image to recreate would be so hard. I decided on this gorgeous sunset I saw in California last spring. I started off my project by making the background, which in this case is the actually sunset. It was challenging to make sure my couleurs were matching with the original image. my sunset looks a little more green the original but we’ll just say its an artistic choice. I wanted to make i used all my equations form the start, so I looked over the image to see where they could be used. I saw that the clouds and trees had a rounded top so I used quadratic formulas. The process of the creation of the image was a long process, but I was advancing. I had almost finished my project minus the clouds when i opened my computer and all my customized colors were gone. I was panicking thinking something was wrong with my laptop or that I did something.  I had to change all my colors to the basic colors Desmos provides. I decided there was no point in wasting my time trying to fix it, so I just kept going. thankfully after a couple days the colors came back for the most part so I quickly changed them. I was having some problems on how stuff were laying on top of each other. I asked some questions and it was fixed. I ‘m pretty sure if I never asked, my clouds would be siting on top of the whole project. Overall this project was pretty simple after I started understanding how to play with the function. I learned how to use domain and range to my advantage and using different functions. At the start of the project i was looking over the criteria and  I was thinking where would I use square root functions in my project. Who knew they would make perfect branches, or that absolute functions would look exactly like grass sprouting up. I’m proud of how my project turned out and all the hard work I put into it.
