3D Data Visualization- Science 10 Honours

Explanation

  • The data we had gathered were discussing child care centers in Canada . We decided that we should make a map of Canada split up by the provinces, that then we used the height to represent how many  childcare centers there were, per 100 kids (1 cm= I childcare center) We used monopoly houses to symbolize childcare centers. The ones that were for the majority licensed were green, and unlicensed were red. We used  different colors to represent the different ages of the kids attending childcare centers. Yellow= younger than 1, red= 1-3, purple= ages 4-5 that aren’t in school, blue= ages 4-5 that are attending school, and we had brown for the ages that there was no data for. And finally we had made little flags that had the percentage of how much the provinces were struggling with finding safe childcare centers.

Core competency

Critical thinking

While completing this project, I was working on my critical thinking. This could be while gathering data, creating a prototype, and even writing this reflection. I had to use this competencies to gather information and make connections with different data sets. I had to sort out useful information, but also recognize what would not be necessary for what I was working on. Having the liberty to chose whatever inspired me, made it possible for me to highlight my critical thinking on my own. I had to be strategic on what was the main idea and not get side tracked by adding to many details that would hide the original idea.

Being someone that has a better understanding in math and science related problems, finding the data and explaining it, was a piece of cake. But because this has to be a 3d data visualization, that means ill have to step out of my comfort zone. I was in charge of drawing the map of Canada and dividing the provinces. And when I tell you it was a struggle, it really was. It took me at least five tries, and it still was not what I wanted, but I’ve learned that there are more important things too worry about and not all the little lakes in Nunavut. It was interesting seeing how one piece of data that is just a simple bar graph, could turn into an intricate map of Canada with different heights and colors, and still have all the same information.

I can statements

I understand how to  gather data and show it in a different way

-> During this project I collected different data, and then made a 3d visualization using the same data.

I can work with others while still assuring that my ideas are showed as well

-> As I did this project with a partner, I can work collaborative and come up with ideas together. But at the same time. I can show my ideas as well.

I am willing to step out of my comfort zone

-> While drawing and painting during this project, there were times when it felt so hard. But in doing so I stepped out of my comfort zone , and still made great quality work.

Science Communication- Scientific Method & Paper Airplanes

Results

After testing out how the different weight of a paper plane would affect it’s duration in the air, we have found that having a paper plane with 1 paper clip will result in a longer duration flying in the air. We tested out a standard planes’ duration in the air, afterwards we added one paper clip, and finally we added an additional paper clip. We used the same plane to assure that the construction of the plane wouldn’t be different and that it wouldn’t affect the results. We repeated the same process times so that we could find an average. After recording the time for each trial to 2 decimal places, we could find the average.

Our first trial we used the plane that had no paper clips.

Trial 1  : 1.40 sec     Trial 2 : 1.14 sec      Trial 3: 2.18 sec         Trial 4 : 1.23     Trial 5 : 1.21 sec

Average= 1.43 sec

Our second trial was the same plane but with an added paper clip.

Trial 1 : 1.44 sec      Trial 2: 1.73 sec        Trial 3: 1.60           Trial 4 : 1.33 sec       Trial 5 :1.71 sec

Average= 1.55 sec

And our finally trial was the same plan but with two paper clips added onto it.

Trial 1: 1.11 sec      Trial 2: 1.08 sec       Trial 3 : 0.76 sec         Trial 4: 1.58 sec       Trial 5: 0.86 sec

Average = 1.07 sec

Between our first place plane and second place plane there is only a different of 12 milliseconds, which is not very much. It shows that adding a couple extra grams will affect the end result for the expirement.

What did I learn?

I learned that having a plane with a paper clip added to it, will result in a longer duration in the air, compared to a normal plane and and a plane with 2 paper clips. Having a paper clip added onto your plane will help stabilize your plane, and make sure it fly’s for a longer time

What would I do different next time?

I would use a ruler to make the lines more crisp which will make sure the plane is even on both side.

Reflection

In your post write to explain how you figured out what equation to use. Did you have any challenges? any aha moments? Did you get help? Did you use any strategies? How did this assignment help you understand more about functions?

  • Looking at the examples Ms. Hubbard showed us for examples, I was overwhelmed. We were looking at all these amazing Postcards, that looked so complex and perfect. I had no clue how in the world I was going to this.  I’m also the most un=artistic person ever so I couldn’t rely on my art skills to help me. I started of my project by picking my picture. Who knew that picking an image to recreate would be so hard. I decided on this gorgeous sunset I saw in California last spring. I started off my project by making the background, which in this case is the actually sunset. It was challenging to make sure my couleurs were matching with the original image. my sunset looks a little more green the original but we’ll just say its an artistic choice. I wanted to make i used all my equations form the start, so I looked over the image to see where they could be used. I saw that the clouds and trees had a rounded top so I used quadratic formulas. The process of the creation of the image was a long process, but I was advancing. I had almost finished my project minus the clouds when i opened my computer and all my customized colors were gone. I was panicking thinking something was wrong with my laptop or that I did something.  I had to change all my colors to the basic colors Desmos provides. I decided there was no point in wasting my time trying to fix it, so I just kept going. thankfully after a couple days the colors came back for the most part so I quickly changed them. I was having some problems on how stuff were laying on top of each other. I asked some questions and it was fixed. I ‘m pretty sure if I never asked, my clouds would be siting on top of the whole project. Overall this project was pretty simple after I started understanding how to play with the function. I learned how to use domain and range to my advantage and using different functions. At the start of the project i was looking over the criteria and  I was thinking where would I use square root functions in my project. Who knew they would make perfect branches, or that absolute functions would look exactly like grass sprouting up. I’m proud of how my project turned out and all the hard work I put into it.

Climate in Canada- territories

Territories

In the territories all 4 sphere are found everywhere. there is a lakes, mountains, animals, plants, and of course the atmosphere.  Every second our world is changing. this could be the animals, plants, people. So, we have to make sure that we are taking car of our planet. We were introduced to our climate in Canada project. we were given 1 part of Canada that has all 4 spheres, a biotic and biotic factors, and is being affected by climate change. I got the Territories. here is the drawing that I have drawn. As you could see there are a couple biotic and abiotic factors, the 4 spheres, the carbon cycle including amounts.

legend:

ab=abiotic

b=biotic

Effects of a warming climate

  • The whole world is being affected by climate change. Ice caps are melting, high heat in countries that are usually cold, earthquakes all over the middle east, And it’s our fault. Humans are one of the leading factors. Our gas cars that were used to transport us 86% of time, is ruing our earth. Mining and burning gas damages our environment and climate. gas is mostly made up of methane (a colorless, odorless flammable gas which is the main constituent of natural gas. It is the simplest member of the alkane series of hydrocarbons.) Methane is a dangerous gas that destroys our climate. And considering that most people drive gas powered cars, it is putting a strain on our earth.
  • Effects from climate don’t just affect the climate, but also all living things. since 2008 red pandas are endangered. that was 15 years ago, and nothing has changed, red pandas are still endangered, and we’ve done nothing about that. And I know that red pandas don’t exist in Canada, but this is just one example.

Causes of a warming climate

  • considering that the territories is mostly made up of mother nature, most of the causes are from nature itself. the Ice and snow on mountains are melting, which results in the sea level raising. this problem is causing even more problems for our animals. like I have drawn on my drawing, there are many bears found in the territories. Bears rely on plants and animals for their nutrients. with sea level rising, it makes it more difficult to catch fish. Bearing in mind that fish are one of bears major food source.
  • ATVing is a common attraction found in the territories. Because there are a ton of trails and forests near by, that introduces a bunch new people. like I spoke in my last paragraph, I talked about how gas is bad for the climate. ATVing is a 4 wheeled vehicle that resembles a car but with no hood. you run down hills with these vehicles.
  • atv’s use a ton of gas. And like I’ve talked about how bad gas is for the climate, we can’t change anything. We would have to put a ban to change this. We can’t always be blaming the climate from changing, but more people

Core compentencies

Critical thinking

Describe how the artifact you selected shows your strengths & growth in specific core competencies. The prompt questions on the left – or other self-assessment activities you may have done – may guide your reflection process.

–          I have chosen my consumable waste plan project. This project was created to help us find ways to help our planet. Being in a foods class means that we cook food often. And ½ of all the ingredients we used had some type of 1 use plastic. Therefore Mr. Brett created some questions that would make us reflect on what some solutions and stuff are we could do, to help our planet.  The reason why I have chosen this assignment is that it demonstrates my thinking competencies. I still remember sitting down at my desk thinking what I could say. I was thinking “how could 1 person come up with everyday ideas that were easy to do?”

I came up with some ideas after listening to what my peers were saying. You can’t expect to come up with a million different answers to your question. You must pay attention to your surroundings and ask questions. Even if you may think the questions are dumb or useless, you never know. You must take a risk and try.
