What are the effects of racism?
In the poem “What Do You Remember Of The Evacuation?” by Joy Kogawa, the author is trying to show discrimination against a certain race may result in, loss of innocence , shame and insecurity. This poem is told in a point of view from a child “All the children in his sight / that might be white.” (line 38), this is symbolizing how this is what she is praying to happen so she would be able to stay in Canada. Although “Who said “don’t insult me” when I proudly wrote my name in Japanese” (line 32) the fact that she can write her name in Japanese and have to worry about what other kids think, is a show of insecurity knowing everyone else is different. There for, to show those that weren’t evacuated, and those who got to stay while watching us be evacuated has the point of view of the Japanese.
