Element Sway/Information Fluency

Part 1

Part 2

Ask – The questions that I needed to ask were:

  1. What questions did you need to research to create your sway?

The questions that I needed to research to create my sway presentation are the description of the elements such as the colour, common uses, interesting characteristics, state at room temperature, melting point, and boiling point. I needed to know how my element was discovered so I asked who discovered it, when was it discovered, who named it, how was it discovered and how is it used. For information on the periodic table, I asked what the element name is, what is the symbol, the atomic number, atomic mass, number of protons, number of neutrons, and number of electrons. Finally, I wanted to add in extra information so I added a video about radium and not well-known facts about radium.

  1. What new or familiar digital tools did you try to use as you work through this project?

I don’t have very much experience with sway so I enjoyed getting more familiar with the program and I also had never added a video into my presentation on sway so I enjoyed learning how to do that as well.

  1. What was the process you used to investigate the topic?

The process that I used to investigate the topic is that I would use trustworthy sites to receive my information from. I would also look at multiple different sites to compare the answers to make sure I found the best and most accurate one.

  1. How did you verify and cite the information you found?

I would verify and cite the information that I found by looking at when it was published. I would assess the site to see if there were a lot of ads or advertising because that is a clue that it could be used for making money. Finally, I would look at who was the writer that wrote the information to see who they are and if it is accurate.

  1. How did the process of completing this challenge go? What could you have done better?

The process of completing this challenge went well because I would work on it in small bits every day to add to the information that I already had. The questions were direct and I was able to answer them confidently with the sites that I used. For next time I don’t think that I would change anything because I felt organized with my work and that needed to be done on time. I understood what I needed to be done to complete this project.

Acquire – Here are the tools I used to gather my information.

  • Google
  • Youtube
  • Opera (similar to google)
  • Ficker.com

Analyze – Here is how I got my information and cited my sources.

I received my information from reliable sites by looking at when they were published, the information on the writer, and the background research on the site. I took notes and put them into my own words on a separate word document to keep my work organized. I wrote down the site names to show where I received my information and images from.

Assess –  Here is how the product and process went.

I am very proud of the finished product because I spent a lot of time gathering the information and wanting to make it look the most professional and organized it can. I was efficient with my time and I worked on it in small bits every day so I wouldn’t feel rushed and I could take my time on making it the best it could be. I don’t think that there is anything I would change for this presentation because I felt organized and happy with my work.

LAB: Chemical Reactions – A Bag of Change

Add one spoonful of Chemical A (sodium bicarbonate) on the left side of the zip-lock bag.  Describe and record the properties for Chemical A.

What is it’s formula?

This formula is called NaHCO3.

List some of the uses of this chemicals?

This chemical is used for cooking , cleaning and for neutralizing acids.

Add 1 spoonful of Chemical B (Calcium chloride) on the right side of the zip-lock bag.  Do not mix the chemicals.  Describe and record the properties for Chemical B.

What is it’s formula?

This formula is called CaC12.

List some of the uses of these chemicals?

It is used as a food additive, food preservation, de-icing roads, and used in pool chemicals.

How is chemical B different from Chemical A?

Chemicals A is smooth and chemical B is made of small balls. They are also used for different uses.

Look and describe Chemical C (Bromothymol blue).  Record your observations in the space provided.

What is it’s formula?

The formula is called C27H28Br2O5S.

List some of the uses of these chemicals?

Bromothymol blue may be used for observing photosynthetic activities, or as a respiratory indicator.

Now you are ready for the observations of change.

Mix a small amount, not all of it, Chemical A with Chemical B in the middle zip-lock bag.  Record observations.

When mixing chemical A and B in the zip lock bag they did mix although there was no change in their physical form.

Add 10 mL of chemical C into a plastic bag.  QUICKLY remove as much air as possible and then seal it up.  In the first 30 seconds, squeeze the bag in various places to mix the chemicals. What do you observe? Take a photograph and if possible video recording.

Immediately when chemical C was added into the bag the colour turned from blue to yellow, the powder started foaming and the temperature turned hot.

Before                                                 After

After 2 minutes thoroughly record any new observations.

After 2 minutes the temperature changed to a cooler temperature, the powder had stopped foaming, the bag had filled up with air/gas.

In the space below add at least two photographs of your zip-lock bag.

When you are finished, wash all the chemicals down the drain and rinse out the plastic bag. Discard the UNSEALED bag in the correct discard.  DO NOT take off your goggles until everyone in the room has completed the lab.

What evidence of chemical change did you observe in the bag?

The temperatures differed from hot to cold multiple times. The powder

Had changed textures, the chemicals were mixed and there was air/gas released into the bag.

What physical changes did you see? Answer in complete sentences.

The physical changes that we saw were that the colour of the chemicals that we were using had changed from the white powder and the blue die to the whole thing going a gold yellow colour. When we added in the blue die it made the powder foam.

My cells

This is my cell from the 400x and you are able to see the nucleus in the middleof the cell.

This is the 100x. You can see that there a large clump of cells on the to left.

This is the 40x, you are able to see the cells from a far although they are not very clear.

Core Competencies Self-Assessment

So far in this quarter 2 of math, I have been staying on top of my homework and assignments that are due each day. I think that I have grown a lot so far in math by furthering my understanding of negative and positive numbers. I have really enjoyed the Kahoot game we have played and the different ways we have been given to help us study for our quizzes and tests. I have also grown tremendously in my note-taking in class and making it look neat by using different colors and fonts.

My goal, for next quarter, is to keep asking questions when I do not understand and going through all the homework and assignments we have been given to use as a study guide for tests. I think that I will do well in hybrid because I am good at organizing my time and I feel confident with using the online programs that are going to be used each day for future math assignments.
