Media Research – VSCO

Where was the start of the number one most popular photo editing app and how did they thrive in the competitive online platform? VSCO is a high-quality photo editing app that adds filters and makes presents to your photos before sharing them. You can be creative with colours, themes and develop your photography skills. The app was launched in 2011 in its headquarters in Oakland, California by the creators of Joel Flory and Greg Lutze. By May 2014, the app was raised $40 million from investors and continues to grow and expand its network. VSCO’s platform is unique from other new media apps by not having “like” or follower count. The company wants people to relate and be inspired by pictures and not where they come from or who posted them. VSCO has influenced popular hashtags from #vsco and #vscocam and jargons like “VSCO girl”. In 2021, 200 million photos on Instagram have been tagged to VSCO and is, “one of the strongest brands on Instagram” (Barkho 2016). There are lots of people that use the filters and take advantage of this app although it is rated for an audience of thirteen years and older because is the public and unsecured photos that can be posted. According to Gabriela Barkho, [the] online VSCO community is an inclusive, full-fledged commune of creatives for anyone to join” (2016). All that is needed is an email and username to get started to create amazing photos and collages, once there is a profile, the username will receive 10 filters and all the essential tools for editing. There are filter packs that range from $0.99 to a few dollars if the consumer is looking for a small upgrade. VSCO also had a membership that costs $25 a year and it allows members to use the in-app camera to take pictures, and images. They can be uploaded to the app directly from the phone’s camera roll and ready to be shared. Brands partner with photographers on Vsco to run advertising campaigns, which the company helps facilitate. VSCO is always looking to expand its platform and has acquired brands from Rylo a video editing start-up in 2019 and Al-powered video editing app in 2020. In Oakland California, they have a determined team of 82 employees that wants to build creative tools, spaces, and connections driven by self-expression. This is an expanding app that is self describes by a, “photo company for creators, by creators” (Great escapes journal).

New Media Intro

Throughout the year’s technology has been developed to be able to communicate with people from all over the world. In traditional media like broadcasts, television, and radio you aren’t interacting with people and making connections. New media is an online and digital way of exchanging information. You can express yourself, enhance spelling and improve communication skills with people you have lose relationships with or people you have never met. You can access video content anytime and have a variety of different things to watch from only one device.  Although there are so many different platforms and devices you can use during different times in a day. For example, you check your phone when you wake up, during lunch, and at dinner. New media can follow you wherever you’re going and distract you from your daily routine, “the average American spent more than 12 hours a day with various media” (Dovovan 2018). From my personal experience with balancing media in a healthy way is by having a spot in my room where I can securely leave my phone when I am doing homework, being with my family, going to bed, or “might want to just chill once in a while” (Dovovan 2018). I will turn my notifications off so I don’t feel the need to check my phone frequently and I will use that time to be present in my life. When we select sources to gather information it is important that we find real facts appropriate opinions. You can ask yourself some simple questions, is it current, what is the purpose, who is the author, or is it trying to sell you something. Another important thing to look at is the domain name in what the website ends with, is it commercial, government-run, or a website from a specific country.
