This week we learnt about geometric sequences. It is somewhat similar to arithmetic sequences although instead of having a difference, the numbers are multiplied by a constant common ratio (r). The regular formula for calculating terms within the sequences is:
=a
While I was doing my weekly assignment, it was going pretty good. I was understanding how to do every question well. I finally came across the last question and I was a bit confused. The question wanted the common ratio so be a percentage. So I did the question with the given ratio, but I kept on getting the question wrong…
After a bit of reviewing and re-reading the question I realized that the percentage was increasing by 7%. I re-did the question and got the right answer.
Increasing = 1.07
Decreasing = 0.07
Question: Between the Canadian censuses in 2001 and 2006, the number of people who could converse in Cree had increased by 7%. In 2006, 87,285 people could converse in Cree. Assume the 5 year increase continues to be 7%. Estimate to the nearest hundred how many people will be able to converse in Cree in 2031.
= 87 285
= 87 285
= 122 400 people
