Sonnet – English 10 A

In English class this week we’ve been working on our poetry unit. We were instructed to write a sonnet on our chosen topic. I chose to write my sonnet on the four seasons.

Four Seasons

Fall leaves crunch under my feet

Pumpkins on doorsteps and candy in bowls

Crisp autumn air smelling sweet

A few months pass and the snow begins to fall

Quiet streets, lamps aglow

People open their doors while carolers sing

Under the earth shoots grow

The sun peeks out from the clouds, it’s finally spring

Flowers blossom, children play

The time has come for summer break

The beach is where I spend my day

The cool, blue water of the lake

For different reasons

I love all four seasons

how did you figure out which equations to use?

At the beginning of class, we were given a list of equations to use, such as linear, quadratic, square root, circle and cubic. I decided which equations would work best based on the different parts of my body. For my head and eyes, I used the circle equation because it is the most realistic. For my eyes I still used the circle equation, but I stretched it out a bit to make it more of an oval shape. I decided to use a parabola for my hair, because I realized I could use the bottom end and put it on top of my head and the have my hair coming down. I wanted to make my hair look a bit more realistic, so I used multiple parabolas to represent different strands of hair.

did you have any challenges? did you have any “aha” moments?

One of the harder parts for me was the neck. I couldn’t figure out how to make a vertical line, so I decided to look online to see if I could figure it out. I soon realized that instead of using the linear equation y = x, I simply had to flip it around and use x = y. One of my “aha” moments was when I was really confused on how to do my nose, but the I had the idea to just do a parabola and restrict the x values so the it becomes very small.

did you get help? did you use any strategies?

When we started the assignment in class, it was harder because we were just getting started and we didn’t really know what we were doing. At first my plan was that I was going to have a bun on my head because I thought that would be easier than having my hair down. I tried to make my bun, but it looked kind of weird with a ball just sitting on top of my head. When I got home I decided to challenge myself and do my hair down, and I think it looks a lot better. I didn’t really get any help on this assignment, but if I was stuck I would go online and find out how to do it.

what did this assignment help you understand about functions, relations and their graphs?

This assignment helped me understand that if there is even the tiniest change in an equation, it can make a huge difference. I also learned how to manipulate an equation to make it how I want and that math can be artwork too!

Math 10 – Graphing Stories

In ms. Mcarthur’s block C class we learned about relations and functions and how to graph them. For this project we had to create our own graphing stories and find the independent variable, the dependent variable, the input, the output, the domain and the range.

Flag Pole Lab Math 10 2018

In math today we tried to find the height of the Canadian flag pole outside Riverside Secondary School. The students in Ms. McArthur’s class used different devices such as, clinometers, trundle wheels and meter sticks to try and solve the problem. After we went outside we returned to the class to start on a worksheet to calculate the height of the flag pole. Abby and I did our calculations and found that the height is 9.5 meters. We then wrote a reflection the problem.
