In this writing type project, I had the challenge of taking a short story and transitioning it into a screenplay. The original short story, Marionette’s Inc., was written in the style of a narrative as it was telling the story of the main character, Braling and his robot. The new screenplay could also be a narrative as well as descriptive writing because the author would describe a scene to create a clear image while telling the story. Something that I had a hard time with was choosing what parts of the story to include in the screenplay without it being too long. I wanted to follow the story closely and capture the same emotions at the original, so I had an aspect from every major event in the short story while changing the dialogue. The drama and emotions from the original short story were very intense towards the end of the story as Braling Two was forcing Braling into the cellar and I tried to have the same amount of drama in the screenplay. While working on this project, I learned a lot about the importance of setting and using descriptive language, creating dialogue that captures emotion, and the proper formation of screenplay documents. I have developed a large amount of respect for the writers of screenplays because it takes a lot of hard work, knowledge and understanding to create a screenplay that successfully incorporates aspects of a story.
