Analyzing Cats Don’t Care
Through the sly, green eyes of a cat and through the happy, excited eyes of a dog, we get a glimpse of what these household pets really think of each other. Patricia Walter is the narrator for this Lyric poem, Cats Don’t Care and she seamlessly knits an AABB rhyme scheme into the telling of a cats personality. This poem is hard to fit into a category, but I was thinking, you could call it historical because I’m positive that the cat has ignored the dog, since the beginning of time. It could also go under social issues, because you are dealing with two different personalities and how they interact with each other.
In the poem, the dog tries to get the cat to play with him, but the cat doesn’t want to do anything, so he sits up high so the dog can’t bother him. The dog is determined so he starts to cry and begs but the cat does not budge. The dog sits patiently waiting, but the cat just lies there not moving leaving the dog bored and pleading with all his might for the cat to move, acknowledge, or even care. This is a great poem, but it is very stereo typical because it stereotypes cats as non -caring, sly, cheeky, lazy, and an over all trouble maker. On the other hand the dog is an energetic, caring, friendly, innocent and loveable. We all know that is not always the case.
“It’s really not fair, those agile cats hiding in places just like rats.” (Cats Don’t Care By: Patricia Walter) This is an example of a simile because Patrice Walter is comparing cats and rats using the word “like”. The simile is explaining that cats are able to hide almost anywhere.
The Poem starts down in tone. It says how cats don’t care about anything or anyone but themselves. The cat gloats to the dog saying “look how agile and smart I am, to be able to get up this high.” The dog looks with envy, wishing he could get closer , “the dog barks and starts to cry.” (Cats Don’t Care By: Patricia Walter). The dog is upset because he wants to be included. That’s all the dog wants, just to play with the cat, but the cat ignores the dog and falls asleep leaving the dog pleading with the cat to play with him. Looking deeper into the poem it is actually sad, everyone wants to be accepted and included so everyone can relate to it. Here is a thought; the cat has to wake up sometime and it can’t stay out of reach forever, so the dog will get his wish and be able to play with his friend, the cat. This poem also reminds me of how some people think and how we interact with others in our everyday life. It is like society today in the way that there are some people that are very proud, arrogant and self centred. This has its pros and cons because we all need to work together to make our world a better place. We need to be open to others, their opinions, feelings and situations. On the other hand there are people that lack confidence to to stand up for them selfs or what they believe in. They are a people pleaser, and are always worried what other people think.
This is an amazing poem. It is simple on the outside but complex on the inside.
The cat is independent but he lacks compassion, where the dog is compassionate but is dependent on others. Through the sly, green eyes of a cat and through the happy, excited eyes of a dog, we got a glimpse of what these household pets really do, think of each other.
