- Is the One Child Policy key to controlling China’s population? Explain why.
Yes, the one child policy has helped control China’s population. China’s population is the highest in the world. The one child policy limits one child only for each family. The Chinese government wants to use this policy decrease population. Although, the population of China still has risen up, it has been slower than before.
- Is the Policy fair for citizen’s rights? Explain why.
No, the policy is not fair for Chinese citizen’s rights. Some of wealth families still have more than one child just because they have enough money to pay for the fine and to raise another child. However, some of poor families have more than one child, they do not have the ability to pay the fine and raise second child. They can only watch their child get taken away and cannot do anything.
- Has the Policy caused more good or bad? Explain why. (Can be qualitative or quantitative)
The one child policy caused more bad things. China’s policy of controlling population has taken over 30 years to completely China’s demographic shifts. However, as the demographic transition, china’s population has still increased. Some problems have also come up 1. The policy has accelerated the china’s aging population. The aging people who are over 60 years old have more than 10% of china’s population. 2. The policy does not work in rural areas. Family who live in the rural area, they need their children to work in farm. So many rural families cannot follow the one child policy. 3. An increasing gender imbalance in favour of males led family planning to focus on education, health and economic opportunities for women.
Read the following debate, for each of your answers above, state what the best opposing argument is and explain why or why it doesn’t change your thinking.
- After reading the debate for first question, I still think the one child policy is the key to controlling China’s population. China has 1.4 billion people and a fifth of the world’s population. China has to use the one child policy to control the overpopulation. On the other hand, China would have far too many children if Chinese government not established the one child policy.
- After reading the debate for second question, I change my mind. I think the policy is fair to Chinese citizens. China faces an extreme overpopulation crisis. Chinese government must set up the one child policy. The policy also improves living standards of Chinese and quality of Chinese’s education and health. Also, the policy is not legal; the Chinese government just wants to encourage Chinese citizens to have only one child. If families really want a second child and have ability to raise, then they can have one; they just have to pay a fine. So if families do not have ability to raise the second child and do not have enough money to pay the fine, then don’t do it.
- After reading the debate for third question, it does change my thinking. I think the one child policy is good for children. The policy improves china for young generations. Although the policy limits one child only for each family, parents will get more personal attention and give more love for that child. The child grows up with no brothers or sister that is a good thing. The child will be more independent and mature.
Well done. Try to be clear about which point from the opposing article changed your mind or not.
