“The Stolen Letter”Character Sketch

In “The Stolen Letter” Mr. Germain is a bad Chief of the Paris Police, because he is a greedy, cautious, incapable person. In the story, the chief could not find the letter, but he wanted to have that enormous reward. So he asked a famous detective named Dupin for help and even said, “I would gladly give my personal check for fifty thousand francs to anyone who could get me that letter.” This shows how greedy the chief was. He only wants money and doesn’t really care about the letter. He was also a cautious person because he wanted to find the letter, but he also needed Dupin’ s assistance. Before he began to tell Dupin the whole thing, he said, “ let me caution you to keep this secret. If anyone found out that I confided this to you, I would certainly lose my job.” He was also careful in how he searched the Minister’s house. He searched the entire house, room by room, spending many days in each. Since he did not find the letter. This shows he was an incapable police chief.
