Social Media is Harmfully Good.

Social Media has been controversial between good and bad for a while. More specifically, since around 1997 when it first came out, and since then, even if we have improved it over time, the negative parts seems to never go away. When I say negative stuff, I’m talking about scams, false information, cyberbullying, and addiction. As we can all agree, social media can also do good things, such as let you know what’s going on in the world, communicate with people, and even see a person even if they are on the other side of the world. In my opinion, these goods things are more significant than the issues of social media because these issues aren’t necessarily issues if you don’t let them be. You can avoid a lot of these negative things by being smart about it and know what not to do. For example, if someone is harassing you online, and you are hurt by it, avoid communicating with that person and if you need to, block them so they can’t talk to you. Of course, there are other situations that can happen that’s not as simple to put an end to, but you can still avoid it from ever happening by watching what you are doing. Avoid scams by doing research before investing in it, avoid your accounts being hacked into by using unique passwords, make sure you have good posture so you don’t injure yourself, avoid using it for long amounts of time so you don’t strain your eyes,  and most importantly, do not share too much online. When saying or sharing things, ask yourself “What could happen if other people see this?” because nothing is completely private even if you think it is. The person who received what you send could easily screenshot it and show other people. This could either lead to absolutely nothing, or something as bad as what happened to Amanda Todd, who took her own life because of someone who shared a private picture of her on social media and constantly harassed her, and this is not the only incident in which bullying people online has affected them to that extent which is a major issue, but it’s not just social media that this can happen on. It can also happen on basic phone calls or texts or in person. So, it’s always something that will unfortunately be there, even if we take away the easier opportunities to do it. This can also be avoided if we all understand the issue behind cyber bullying. Parents could talk to their kids more about not bullying as well as how to deal with it so that they know not to do anything they can regret online. The point that I’m trying to make is that social media can be bad, but can also be amazing when you use it correctly.

Reality

In order to get a better understanding of the world, I can travel around more and see more things for myself rather than only believing in what is said from other people. I can be more open to other beliefs to understand how other people see the world so I can understand how other people see it too.

Core Competencies Reflection

Invisible

Mitch feels invisible. Nobody can see him, nobody knows him, and nobody has tried to know him. He’s tried many times to make friends, but never had any luck. He feels helpless. He takes a walk around his city every morning to clear his mind, but some days it seems to only make it worse. Today, he decides that it’s best to stop trying. He stays home, not talking to anybody. He tries to call his family, but none of them pick up. He sits on his couch watching TV, but nothing seems to be on. It’s always the same thing. He decides to go have a nap instead, hoping to kill some time so he can try again tomorrow. He sits in his bed for hours, not able to fall asleep. He’s very tired. Even though it hasn’t been working, he remains in his bed for the rest of the day. He knows that nothing else would help him feel better.

He gets up the next morning, knowing that he can not do what he did yesterday. He had to get out of his house. He had to go somewhere peaceful. He puts his blue shoes on and walks out the door, making sure to lock it. He takes a fifteen-minute walk up to a large bridge. He comes here nearly every day and looks over the edge. Today was different. Today, he climbs onto the railing, and sits there for a bit. He doesn’t feel safe, but this doesn’t stop him. He sits there and thinks for what seems like hours. Every car that passed by interrupted his thoughts, but eventually they seemed to drown themselves out. Everything went completely silent, and he was alone. “You know you’re not alone.” Says a mysterious voice. Mitch looks around but doesn’t see anyone near him. “What?” he asks, not sure how to respond. “You’re not invisible. The only reason you think this is because of yourself.” It says. “Who are you?” Mitch asks in almost a whisper. “Do not worry about who I am. Think about yourself. Ask yourself these questions, and maybe you’ll find that you’ll break this shield blocking you out from the rest of the world.” It says. Mitch looks back over the bridge into the horizon. “I’ve tried that. It didn’t work.” He says. “Try again.” The voice disappears. All of the sounds surrounding him start to fade in again. Confused, Mitch looks back towards the street. “Hey, please get down from there.” Says a man that is looking at him from the sidewalk. Mitch takes a second and climbs off the railing and onto the road without saying anything. “Are you alright? What’s your name?” Asks the man. “My names Mitch. Why?” “I know what your intentions could have been. I was on the way to the coffee shop to get a coffee. Would you like to come with me?” The man asks. Mitch slowly nods, and the man gestures him to come with him. As they walk, Mitch slightly grins, knowing he has been seen.

Weather Observations

The date of the observation was May 30th, 2019. The pressure was higher than yesterday. The air temperature was 24 degrees Celsius. The wind direction was coming from the south and made our ball move 20 degrees. There was no precipitation. The dew point is 20C. The cloud type is stratus. The cloud cover was about 40%. My predictions for tomorrow are it will be more windy. and everything else will be about the same other than having more clouds.

Lo Scambio

Problem Situation

Scenario: John and Emily are high school students who want to get good grades, maintain active social lives, and participate in sports. John is a linebacker on the football team, and Emily is a defender on the soccer team. Their busy lives prevent them from spending much time on their homework, and they both have been averaging Cs with an occasional D on their work in English class. The end of the semester is drawing near, and a major final project and test are looming. They both think they will pull off at least a B in the course by doing well on these final activities. However, both the football and soccer teams have qualified for post-season games, and both John and Emily are on the decorating committee for a major end-of-year dance which they will attend. Secretly they both want to be selected as King and Queen for the dance, so they have been spending extra time socializing with other students after practice in the evenings.

  1. I believe John and Emily are deceiving themselves about doing well in their English class because they aren’t putting enough time into doing the work and learning in able to actually do well.
  2. I think that John and Emily might get a bad grade in English class while they are busy with the other things they are doing by not spending enough time on studying for the English project and test.
  3. John and Emily could possibly blame others for not being able to do good in English for making them as busy as they are during that time.
  4. If I could do anything different in their position, I would opt out of trying to be King/Queen for the dance because that is not as important as everything else they are doing. If that’s not enough, I would also not do as much for the sports until the project and test are done.
