Walter Mitty Daydream Six

The short story, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” written by James Thurber. Shifts frequently from expressionism to realism, this plays a big part of the story and is pretty much what the story is about, him being bored of his whole life and escaping from it by dreaming about him having an insane adventurous and dangerous life. Expressionism is mental concepts which are displayed as, flash backs, memories, dreams, thoughts, pause of life time, this would be Walter Mitty in his dreams throughout the story. Realism is seeking to reproduce the effect of actuality, real-life people and situations, the description of what is happening in the present, this would be when he is not in his dreams but in reality. The sixth dream created, which is the continuation of the story, was about him on the side walk after waking up from the fifth dream and seeing police officers causing him to think about being a police officer, waking into a store and getting in to a bad situation, with a cliff hanger/unresolved ending.

…sirens blast through the air piercing Walters ears. Walter looks up and sees three police cars come screaming down the street, they come to a hard stop right down the street from Walter. The smell of cigarettes in the air turns to burnt rubber from the tires. Police rushing out of their cars in to a store yelling. Five minutes later they come out from an alley way with two men in hand cuffs, and they put the men in to the police cars. Walter walks over to the scene of the crime to see what caused such a kerfuffle, when he arrives he talks to some of the people standing around watching. He finds out that there was a hostage in the back of the store but the police found a secret way in to get to the man before he did anything to the hostage. Walter starts to walk back to the store his wife is still in. He leans back on to the window but then he turns around to see what is taking his wife so long in the store, he notices that a customer is arguing with one of the employees in the front of the line, his wife is next in line but after the customer and employee arguing…

Walter walks into the store, the blue of his uniform gleaming off the reflection in the window, the tapping of his police boots against the ground silences the whole room, the people arguing at the front stop and look at Walter. He tells them to “stop arguing and let the kind, beautiful lady waiting in line buy her stuff”, his wife comes and gives him a big hug. Both the people at the front apologise and the lady pays for her stuff. As Walter starts to leave he hears a scream coming from in the back of the store. He sprints into the back bursting through the doors to see a women tied up in a chair. But she was all alone, no one else to be seen. The Lady is trying to warn Walter of something but he cannot understand because of the fabric around her mouth muffling the sound of her voice. Walter removes the fabric, “behind you” she says.

The Butterfly Effect in “A Sound of Thunder”

The story, “A Sound of Thunder” written by Rae Bradbury, is a short story, about a man named Eckels who wants to shoot a tyrannosaurus rex. This short story has many decisions that create butterfly effects, and displays well that one small thing can have drastically consequences. The first mistake Eckels made was even going into the time machine, or even going to the time safari Inc. Next Eckels was very scared and nervous when he saw the T-rex, this causes him to run off the path, which causes him stepping on the butterfly without noticing. When the whole group gets home Eckels and the group realize everything is different, the language they speak, and the presidential election results have changed. This all ends with Eckels being killed by Mr. Travis. this story is a great example and really shows how Eckels and the whole safari’s decisions impacted them and how they had such a domino effect, or butterfly effect.

marijuana legalization

why it should be legal

I think marijuana should be legal. the main reason why I think this is because, people are going to use it no matter  what, but its better for them to get it from a trusted shop than some dealer that has no idea what is in it, with it being legal you can go into a store and get weed you know wont kill you and is laced with other drugs. also Marijuana is legal in some form in close to half the states in the U.S. and a majority of the country supports legalization, also legalization could lead to billions of dollars in tax revenue so the government would make loads of money, states with legalization are doing just fine, the link between legalization and more pot use is inconclusive, legalization also helps us better understand marijuana’s health effects, No one has ever died of a marijuana overdose, Around 40% of Americans have already admitted to using marijuana. One of the biggest and most widespread arguments from marijuana detractors is that smoking marijuana will lead to using other drugs. As scientific American points out, the studies that show people who use marijuana first before trying other drugs is correlation and not causation. People who go on to use harder drugs also tend to smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol before trying the other substances plus with our current stigma on pot only people who are predisposed to being a “outlaw drug user” are going to smoke pot. On top of all of this, as mentioned above, nearly half the country has already tried pot which is much much more than the percentage of Americans who are left handed.

why it shouldn’t be legal

Smoking any substance will have a negative and potentially life-threatening effect on your respiratory health. Marijuana use can affect a person’s memory, IQ, judgment, and problem-solving skills. There are many cases, linking the use of marijuana to the increased chance of forming a mental illness, although there is little scientific evidence to prove this. Marijuana use, like the use of alcohol, can cause impairment in the user. This means if a person is driving whilst under the influence, they may be more prone to having a collision and potentially harming a pedestrian or fellow road user. There is also a chance that marijuana use during work will reduce your ability to perform your job efficiently, which can be potentially dangerous for certain professions. legalization may increase its abuse. The most widely used drugs in society are legal ones. Alcohol is perhaps the most common, with cigarettes being a close second, marijuana being the third most widely used recreational drug. The legalization of cannabis will lead to a rise in its use and consumption because it is more accessible. Besides, the price of marijuana is dropping.

Astronomy Wonder Assignment

How does a black hole function, how are NASA and other organizations studying black holes, and can we trust that they know what they are doing?

how does a black hole form and how does it function?

Stellar black holes form when the middle of a very big star collapses in upon itself. This causes a supernova, or an exploding star, that explodes parts of the star all over space.

Scientists think supermassive black holes formed at the same time as the galaxy they are in. The size of the supermassive black hole is related to the size of the galaxy it is in.

The most common black holes are stellar black holes which are made from medium stars. The mass of a stellar black hole can be up to 20 times bigger than the sun.

A black hole cannot be seen because the black hole sucks up all the light so there is no light to see the black hole. But you can see the effects of the gravity on the stars and other stuff around it such as gas. If a star is orbiting a certain point in space, scientists can study the stars motion to see if they are around a black hole.

When a black hole and a star are orbiting close together, high-energy light is made, and scientists can see this with the technology they have.

how are NASA and other organizations studying black holes and can we trust that they know what they are doing?

A black hole’s gravity can sometimes be strong enough to pull off the outer gases of the star and grow a disk around itself called the accretion disk. As gas from the accretion disk spirals into the black hole, the gas heats to very high temperatures and lets out X-ray light in all directions. NASA telescopes measure the X-ray light. Astronomers use this information to learn more about black holes.

NASA is learning about black holes using spacecraft like the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the Swift satellite and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Fermi launched in 2008 and is observing gamma rays. The most energetic form of light in search of supermassive black holes. Spacecraft like these help scientists answer questions about the universe, how it started and how it evolved.

I think we can trust what they are doing because I don’t think they would post all this on their website if it was all false and I think that they would make sure that everything they are doing is 100%correct with no flaws before they let the world know about it. Also, NASA is the biggest space exploring company and they posted this on their website, so if they aren’t doing it right then no one is.

1.      What questions did you need to research in order to research your topic?

I had to research how black holes function, and how NASA is studying black holes and               the technology they use.

2.      What new or familiar digital tools did you try to use as you worked through this project?

I used to google and my laptop.

3.      What was the process you used to investigate the topic?

I really just researched my project and wrote down the best information I found in my own words.

4.      How did you verify and cite the information you found?

I listed the sources under a citations category.

5.      How did the process of completing this challenge go? What could you have done better?

The process went very smoothly, I think I could have used my time a bit better than I did though.

My Health Goals

In my life I want to improve my academic health, my mental health and my physical health. To improve my academic health, I am going to try, and study more and just try more in school, and get better grades on tests, work sheets and assignments. To improve my mental health, I will spend more time with myself to connect with myself more and spend more time around positive and kind people and spend more time with my family and less time just on my phone or watching Netflix. To improve my physical health, I will play more basketball and other sports outside my house or at a nearby park. I feel like all of these will really improve my overall health and make me happier as a person.

Careers and Conversations

The careers and conversations I talked to Carson Hamill who is a financial adviser and I also talked to Rory Morgan who is a lawyer. I have always wanted to be a lawyer so talking to Mr. Morgan was very interesting and informational. Mr. Hamill, the financial adviser really inspired me to be a financial adviser, going in I didn’t really have an interest in being a financial adviser but after I realized that it is a real potential of me being a financial adviser. He inspired me because I realized how cool the job is and how well it fits me, I really like to plan out things, especially with money, for example I have already calculated how much money I will make from my job within the next 6 months and I have worked out a financial plan for me spending and saving the money. I also learned that the classes that are recommended I am already taking this year or I have already signed up for on the course selection. The soft skills needed for being a lawyer are, being a people person, problem solving, analytical skills and speaking, organizational skills and I believe I possess all of these. The hard skills needed for being a lawyer are, writing ability, persuasiveness and emotional intelligence, I believe I also have these skills. soft skills for being a financial adviser are, being a people person, problem solver, and analytical skills. the hard skills are, researching, skills, math skills and financial strategies. Ways I can improve these skills are practicing them. I found careers and conversations a very valuable learning experience, because I really did learn a lot and has introduced a new possible career for me.
