A Fresh Look at the Periodic Table

Explanation

In the current periodic table that is used worldwide, it shows the atomic number, atomic mass, and the number of protons and electrons. Our periodic has that information and more. We noticed that in the current periodic table it does not show the number of electrons in the shells. So that’s what we did. In our periodic table, it shows the number of electrons in each shell of each element. You can see the number under the element. In our periodic table, it shows how one shell is added in every period, how when you advance one by one down the elements, there is 1 more electron then the one before it,  it shows that in a family there is the same number of electrons in the valence shell and lastly, our periodic table also shows all the families in different colors. For example, Alkaline Metal is blue.

We could have improved our plan by making our plan in advanced. If we had done that we might have had finished our project during school hours and not doing it for homework. We also could have improved our periodic table by planning out what materials we would need for the project. For example, we did not get the right size of paper so we needed to cut the paper to the right size we wanted.

1.)For this project, we’ve been given a task to make our own periodic table with a partner. This periodic table must be in a different form as the current periodic table we are using and it also must show information about the elements. Some questions we researched before starting the project was “What are some patterns of the periodic table” and we also searched up “alternative periodic table” for some inspiration. After that, we started filling out the collaboration plan worksheet. Then with the information we got from the research, we started to brainstorm what kind of periodic table we should make.

2.) Our periodic table shows the categories/families of all the elements. And another thing that it shows is the number of electrons in each of the shells of each element which we think is unique.  In our periodic table, it shows how one shell is added in every period, how when you advance one by one down the elements, there is 1 more electron then the one before it,  it shows that in a family there is the same number of electrons in the valence shell.  At first, we thought of making our periodic table in a form of a pyramid, but we noticed that I would not work because of what we wanted to show in our periodic table. Therefor we put our periodic table in a rectangle. Our chart is colorful. We used colors to show all the families. For example for the family alkaline metal, we used blue.

3.)  Our plan for this project was to photocopy the periodic table during the weekend, then to start working on it on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, we cut all the elements of the periodic table, then we colored the elements by their family. And on Tuesday we glued the pieces on a piece of paper and we wrote the numbers of electrons under each element. Since we could not finish our project during school hours we finished the projects after school.

  1. Wow. Do you mind if I show your innovative periodic table to my class. I really think it would help them understand the shells a bit better. This is a great idea!
