Astronomy Wonder Project

introduction

The question I wished to answer was “can we ever travel to another galaxy”. I choose this question because it was the biggest space related question I’ve ever wondered. I remember watching a movie called interstellar where they traveled to another galaxy and thought whether this is possible and could we ever leave our galaxy. In order to answer my big question, I had to learn more about the different types of ways we can get there, how they work, their individual flaws and obstacles they face, and whether they were probable. These questions were crucial in order to get a better understanding and find and answer to my question.

types of ways to travel to another galaxy

The first theoretical way we can travel to another galaxy is by simply traveling there with an effect called time dilation. According to Greg kestin, he states that it is possible to travel to another galaxy. He believes this is possible due to time dilation which is when time for you goes slower when reaching high velocity. Lets say you are traveling at the speed of light. The time for you will significantly be slower than the time in earth. Einstein’s theory was that the faster you go, the slower your time moves. It would approximately take 2.5 million years for you to travel to andromeda galaxy which is the closest galaxy found. Of course we will not be alive for 2.5 million years, however based on the information above, due to time dilation it will take a couple of decades physically to arrive in andromeda galaxy. (1)

The second theoretical way you could travel to another galaxy is by using wormholes. I researched about wormhole travel as it may be a shortcut to traveling to other galaxies; however, according to this study, Daniel Jafferis says otherwise. According to Daniel, he states that wormholes are possible but are ineffective. He says that it would take longer to get through these wormholes then to travel directly. Furthermore, he says that if we could find a way to make a wormhole which light could travel through, it would be a help in the quest to develop a theory of quantum gravity which would help us find other important questions about the universe. (2)

The last theoretical way to travel that I cover is Alcubierre warp drive. If this method is possible, This allows you to travel at a pace faster than the speed of light. Alcubierre drive is when you stretch the fabric of space time in a wave, causing the space ahead to contract while the space behind us expands. This idea was originally brought by a Mexican physicist named Miguel Alcubierre(3). Although this method could be possible, as of now it seems to be improbable(5). In order for this to work, you need a large amount positive and negative energy to create a warp bubble. Currently scientist do not know how to produce negative energy so this seems to be a dream for now. (4)

conclusion

In conclusion, I do highly believe that one day we will be able to travel to another galaxy however not anytime soon. In the past there were many theories that were found unprobeable but have later came true but as of now I do not see any of these ideas happening anytime soon without serious research.  researching about this topic has made me wondered some questions such as:

Is time dilation really possible? and can we ever reach a velocity fast enough for time dilation to work?

Is wormhole travel really ineffective?

one day will we be able to descover a negative energy that we can control and use?

  1. Great work! This is a very interesting topic i enjoyed reading. However i do think that we will be able to travel to a Different galexy .

  2. I like the concept of wormholes existing. it’s very interesting and helpful to research as well. I enjoyed reading about the theory of time dilation as well as the fact that the wormholes are ineffective.

    all in all, great post.

  3. Great job, great research, great reasoning… I learnt a lot of things such as wormholes, galaxies and actually learnt stuff of ourselves!! Good Job!!
