FN 10 Consumable Waste – Kylee H

In a typical day, I will have a piece of toast with cream cheese for breakfast, chicken strips for lunch, and a stirfry/something with chickpeas. My bread comes in the generic plastic bag, however it also has a double layer of plastic wrap around the loaf. My cream cheese comes in a plastic tub. I get the chicken strips from the cafeteria, but i assume that they come in a big plastic bag and the oil to fry them in would come in a plastic tub. Chickpeas come in a tin can and our noodles come in a plastic bag. our veggies don’t come in packaging and when we store them in the fridge we use biodegradable bags. If i am eating out, I will get fast food which comes in a lot of plastic wrapping and paper bags. When i work, I will get a drink as well which is a non-recyclable cup. Plastic seems to be the most commonly used material, which really isn’t good for the planet. I think plastic is frequently used because it is cheap and widely available. Plastic is not very positive but plastic is easier to dispose of and open and close. It is negative because it is killing the environment. The materials once we are done with the food inside get thrown into landfills. The average person wastes 231 pounds of plastic per year! Food waste gets composted and will eventually turn back into dirt. To try to reduce waste, we can try to reduce our use of plastic. Some alternatives are biodegradable bags, cardboard, or reusable bags. Another thing we can do is reuse/recycle different materials for different things. You can buy secondhand items and donate used goods instead of throwing them away. Also consider cancelling unnecessary mail! I am really trying to reduce my waste and I suggest that you do the same, for the greater good of our planet.
