Class outline:

  1. Today we will be starting on our second individual Scratch project.  Building on the skills you’ve acquired from your first game and our upcoming lessons we will develop a basic side scrolling game.  Your game must demonstrate the following:
    1. Creation of at least 2 backgrounds and 4 sprites.
    2. A character that appears to fly or hover.
    3. Objects that use the GLIDE function to move across the screen.
    4. Collisions with characters and environments.
    5. Use of multiple variables.
    6. Creating a pick up feature in conjunction with a variable.
    7. Use of the broadcast function.
    8. Animation for your characters.
  2. This project will be due on Wednesday May 6.

Class outline:

  1. Today we will be starting on our first individual Scratch project.  Using the tools and skills that we practiced in class in building our first maze, you will create your own unique game.  Your game must demonstrate the following:
    1. Creation of at least 2 backgrounds and 3 sprites.
    2. Allow a character to be controlled by the keyboard.
    3. Have an object/enemy that can chase you and must be avoided.
    4. Something to defend yourself from the enemy.
    5. Demonstration of collisions with characters and environment.
    6. Switching between different costumes or backgrounds.
    7. Use of a variable.
    8. Use of a clone or broadcast function.
  2. This first project will be due on Wednesday April 29.

  2. Introduce Google Sheets
  3. Using Google sheets to include the information described in the project outline.  You should be sure to include the following:
    1. Use of Formulas whenever possible to do calculations for you
    2. Use of conditional formatting to highlight sales over a certain value
    3. Attempt to use filters in certain columns to allow for a more in depth look at your sales
    4. Various charts to show graphically how well your restaurant is doing
    5. Insert pictures to make your spreadsheet look more professional
    6. Format the sheet to make it look professional

  3. Introduce Menu Portion of the Restaurant Launch project.
    1. The Objective:  You will be creating a menu for your new restaurant.  Use your imagination to create the name, address and menu items for your restaurant.  You can use any tool you with to help create the layout of your menu (Tables, tabs, columns, etc).The details:  Your menu must use the following features:
      • Created on legal size page layout
      • A border
      • A title
      • At least three pictures (this should include your restaurant logo)
      • 3 menu sections (at least two items per section – All menu items require a brief description)
      • An overall color theme of at least three colors (a good way to accomplish this is to have the colors you use in your headings match the main colors of your logo)
      • 2 different font types and font sizes
  4. Student time to work on Drive project.

  3. Digital Citizenship Lesson:
    1. What does it me to be a citizen?  What does the term digital mean?
    2. What are some positive things that we get out of being connected to others digitally?  What are some negative things?  What can be the cause and consequence of some of the negative things we have brainstormed.  Let’s look at both the short term and the long term impact.
    3. What role do we have as individuals in promoting and creating a positive digital environment?
    4. People communicate digitally more than ever now.  What can be some pro’s and con’s to communicating in a digital environment?
  4. Digital Code of Ethics
    1. With one partner, come up with a digital code of ethics for proper behaviour online.  This should be targeted towards teens and be applicable to your life right now.
    2. Your code should have at least 10 different items that you have listed.  Be detailed and specific with each one.
    3. Share your code with the class.

Cyber Security Intro – Find a recent news article or event online in which “Cyber Security” was one of the main focuses of the article.  It could be an information leak, a new virus, a website/server crash, an email hack, etc.  Once you have found and read through your article to gain a good understanding of it you will be paired up with another student.  Together answer the following questions:
    1. What similarities are there between the events?
    2. What was the goal of the hackers or cyber criminals in each event?
    3. How did people react or respond to the event?
    4. What steps do you think could be taken to prevent another event like that from happening?
  4. Cyber Security Lesson – What are things that people do online that would be considered risky?  Think of some sites that you willingly give personal information to.  How can we tell if a site is safe, valid and secure vs one that might be fraudulent? DOC LINK
  5. What are some steps that you would recommend to take to protect yourself online?  Imagine you are teaching someone who has never used a computer before about how to use the internet properly.  Come up with your top 5 things that you would tell them in order to help keep them safe online.
  6. What are some tips for coming up with more secure passwords?
