For this assignment I interviewed Fahim Kanji who works at Foresight B.I. Solutions Inc. who specializes in Reporting and Analytics. He works there as a architect/teamlead; his roles include managing and supporting team members in building, maintaining and operating the architecture they use to support other businesses. He helps the businesses utilize this technology to build analytics they can use in reports and dashboards.

The reason I interviewed this individual is because I wanted to get some more insight into what it is like to work in computer science. A career path I may want to pursue could be something like this. In the future, technology will be more important than ever and this job will require a set of skills that will be very important. For example, programming and designing. Another reason is that it is cool to get an idea of what it is like to work in a technology-based work place. You never really get to see what it is like to work in these places and this is a good opportunity.

Why are you passionate about your job?
Because I like learning and this job requires you to constantly learn. The job helps me help people answer questions about their business to make it better.
What obstacles have you faced to get you where you are today?
The biggest obstacle is probably the rate of change in technology. Because it changes so fast you have to keep up and so you can technically never stop learning.
What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?
The best advice I would give is, because the technology changes so fast you really have to stop and focus on the fundamentals. If you have a good grasp and understanding of the fundamentals, you can really grasp the new technology. The second thing I would tell people is that you need to learn how to communicate, clearly and effectively, this is the most important skill hands down.
Would you recommend others to pursue this career path, if not why?
I would recommend it, but you have to be willing to be dedicated to learning. If you’re not learning you falling behind.
How important is school compared to hands on experience?
They are equally important because school will teach you the fundamentals that you have to know. While the hands on experience will make you good with the technology and make you quickly able to help others.
Reflection
This interview has opened me up to a lot. First of all, it taught me the value of learning in the workplace. From his answers it seems that learning once you get out of school is an important skill for keeping up with your colleges. “…school will teach you the fundamentals that you have to know. While the hands on experience will make you good with the technology…” This quote sums it up perfectly, once you are done school you do not know everything about your craft.

I know this seems obvious but as things change in your industry you have to change and adapt with them. This is especially important in tech jobs since the technology is always changing and improving while in a job like store clerk nothing really changes that often meaning you don’t evolve with your job, you just stay about the same.

And second it shows the importance of communication. Notice how he didn’t say that programming or UI design is the most important, he said it was the communication aspect. Communication is something that can be applied to every job. This means it is definitely the most important skill you need to learn if you want to be successful. It is a universal skill and is something that employers look for in every job candidate. You may be worse at a certain aspect of a job than a contender but if you have miles better communication then you will most likely get the job.
