What is DNA?
DNA is short for deoxyribonucleic acid. DNA is a material found in almost all cells. It is code telling the cell what to do and when to do it. It forms a double helix in its basic form. When it is time the DNA will spit and form a another strand to match up with the other strand. It usually lives in a nucleus in eukaryotic cells and just floats around in prokaryotic cells.
What does DNA do?
DNA is the genetic make up of us, it is the program of the cell like code of a game. Without the DNA the cell would be useless and not be able to complete its tasks like breaking down food or in a viruses case taking over a cell, after all viruses are just bundles in DNA wrapped in protein. It has three stages interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis. In interphase the cell is just doing regular cell stuff, its doing what it is meant to do. In mitosis the nucleus divides. And in cytokinesis the whole cell divides.
How does DNA copy its self?
The first step in replication is unwinding the DNA strands using an enzyme. The two strands become the leading strand and the lagging stand. The lagging strand in facing 5′ to 3′ while the leading one is 3′ to 5′, this means they both replicate differently. Primer then comes along and binds to the strands in different places. On the leading strand DNA polymerase adds A, C, T, G molecules to the strand.
