Safety Story

Lab Safety Assignment

Good Example Of Lab Safety

Bob works at UBC in there chemistry program. At his work they are experimenting with a new unstable element that was newly discovered. They are sure to be very careful with the element because it is the first and only sample ever found. While Bob was testing how the element reacts to water in the fume hood he haphazardly bumps up the window causing the alarm to go off. He quickly closed it back up. A few minutes later is eyes felt like they were stinging, without hesitation he went to the eye wash station and washed his eyes, it was unpleasant at the least but he felt it was better to be safe then sorry.

Bad Example Of Lab Safety

Shane was in his science room in block 5 doing an experiment with elephants tooth paste. He was right in the middle of the experiment when he began to feel quite parched. He reached for is water and took a giant gulp of it. Later in the experiment he started to feel very ill, it was at that moment that he realized that he had drank the fifty volume hydrogen peroxide they where using during the experiment instead of his water. He thought it was fine so he didn’t tell anyone. He died later that day. What he should of done was tell the teacher as soon as he realized what he did, that is the moral of the story.

Safety Equipment

Safety Goggles– Eshan is a student at Pineside elementary school, he is doing a experiment involving find the boiling point of water. He chose not to put on his safety glasses before class. Suddenly a splash of scalding water landed in his vulnerable eye. The teacher had to call the first aid attendant to the room and got fired for letting her student do a experiment without safety goggles.

Alarm Pull Station– Jayda is a student at Greenlands Secondary School in block 3. Her class was doing a experiment with Bunsen burners where they boil cola to see what residue it leaves behind. Out of nowhere one of the cupboards above one of the boys burns caught fire. The class was not equipped with a fire extinguisher because the schools budget was very low so the teacher told Jayda (being the fastest in the class) to sprint down to the fire alarm pull station and pull the alarm. She succeeded and everyone evacuated the school. The school burnt down before the fire crews could get there though, at least theirs no school!

Lab Apron Louis attends Oakwood Secondary School in their science honers class. They where doing an experiment with the density of mercury when a little fleck of it splashed on him, luckily he had his lab apron on protecting him. He quickly took it off and they put in in the fume hood. Everyone ended up being alright because of his quick thinking.

Fire Blanket– Teigan is a student at Seacoast Secondary School, in her science class they did a experiment with the viscosity of oil. When she was handling a beaker of canola a small bit got on her shirt, she walked to the hotplate when the spot with oil on her shirt went up with flames because of the heat from the hotplate. Her friend Marisa with quick thinking threw the fire blanket on her putting out the fire. Teigan was traumatized and had to see a therapist, she never showed up to science again.

Safety Shower– Enzo is a student at Ravenridge College. The class was conducting a experiment when some sodium hypochlorite spilled on him. Enzo being a relatively smart guy ran into the shower washing off all the chemicals. From that day on he was more careful in the lab.

Safety Symbols

WHMIS Symbols

Compressed Gas– Contents in container under pressure. Should be treated with respect because puncturing the container my result in explosion.

Flammable Material– Matter that is flammable and will ignite on contact with flame. Keep away from heat or flames to prevent lighting it up.

Consumer Symbols

Poison– Can cause harm or death if ingested. Avoid eye or mouth contact.

Corrosive– Burn skin and some materials. Put in adequate container.

Ethical Dilemma

Animal Testing

Rosanna works at a aerosol scent company as a scientist runing tests for the product. They test there aerosols on rats to see if they are harmful to humans. One day while she was at work she thought about the animals and what it would feel like if she where them. She thought that it would suck if she where one of the rats getting deadly aerosol tested on her. She told her coworkers about her revaluation, she got laughed at. They told her that they are just rats and it doesn’t really mater. She then realized she had a dilemma on her hands, stop using rats and animal testing or keep using it. What would you pick?

Outside Of Room– Fire pull station by stiars. First aid Mr. Colombo and Mr. Ganges. Fume hood, eyewash, and shower in Mr. Browns room.

  1. You did a great job on your safety story. You communicated your understanding of safety issues in the Science class with your two stories. I really like your ethical dilemma as well: aerosol testing is perfect example. And I am impressed that you know that Elephant’s Toothpaste requires hydrogen peroxide. One thought: using a ruler would help neaten your safety map. Good work!
