For the first unit of Math 10 Honours, some new things I learned are converting entire radicals to mixed radicals and vice versa. I also learned solving cubed, 4th, and 5th roots to convert into mixed/ entire radicals. Converting entire radicals to mixed radicals(vice versa) that includes variables was something that was new for me. Using algebraic procedure to convert repeating decimals into fractions was something interesting I learned and I thought it was a nice way of finding fractions without a calculator. Something I didn’t know in this numbers unit is that if 2 radicals have the same index, then you are able to multiply or divide if told. However you are not allowed to add or subtract 2 radicals; you would have to solve each radical separately first and then add the 2 together.
Estimating square roots was a review for me because we did it in Grade 9 a few times, but it helped me remember other concepts we did about rational and irrational numbers last year. Using factor trees and division tables was something I remembered from previous grades to help with prime factorization of large numbers or just small numbers too.
When I look back at the school year, I would want to remember the vocabulary like index, radicand, radical sign, and radical. It would be used in the future even in university. Converting entire radicals to mixed radicals and vice versa , no matter if its numbers or variables can be useful for the future when I am not allowed to use calculators for worksheets, etc.
