Individual Multiculturalism Assignment

1. An example of people maintaining and encouraging cultural heritage:

Spirit of India at the fair PNE. This was an event that took place on August 26-27, 2017. This event encouraged many people to come and participate. I actually performed at this event which was a really cool experience. It’s goal was to engage Indians scattered around Vancouver and surrounding areas. The event was open to everyone to share India’s culture and heritage.

2. An example of people discouraging cultural heritage:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/aboriginal-peoples-muslims-face-discrimination-most-poll-1.874710

This is an article by CBC News, it is on discrimination against aboriginal peoples, Muslims and people of colour. It states according to a survey taken in 2010, 28% of 2000 people in Canada faced cultural discrimination and intolerance. It talks about how 20% of coloured people face racism regularly.

Conclusion:

Based on my two samples I think Canada is a multicultural country. I think no matter where you are in the world there are going to be conflicts and discrimination. This servey could easily be outdated and I want to believe that things have improved since 2010, as a matter of fact, I actually do see improvements. People are having cultural festivals and broadcasting them. Poeple are also learning about different cultures and religions at school, and many places are opening up for tours.

Various Perspectives of Canadian Identity

1. Above is a photograph of a quote by John Diefenbaker. I chose this resource because it clearly shows the rights of a Canadian Citizen. It shows the freedom a Canadian has and how proud and privileged we are to be in Canada. It also points out our responsibility to stand by all the other Canadians. I really like when he says “free to oppose what I believe wrong,” because it’s like he is saying “I can express my opinion even if you dont think the same.”

2. This reflects my perspective of Canadian Identity because many people don’t realize how lucky they are to be Canadian and forget about the responsibility that comes with being a Canadian Citizen. I think this is an accurate portrayal of being Canadian because it is written by John Diefenbaker who is a former Prime Minister of Canada.

3. I picked a different time period; The 1700’s. Most men would agree with the statement completely but all the women would beg to differ. Women were not treated equally and did not have equal rights. Women would not be allowed to speak without fear or express their opinions or chose who would govern the country.

  1. I picked this website because it shows all the different things the Canadian Red Cross/Canadians  helps with, not only in Canada but world wide.
  2. I think this website clearly shows an accurate portrayal of Canada because all the programs are programs that I have actually heard about. For example the Migrant and Refugee Services or Health Services in Canada I have seen before. (In the news, on tv etc.)
  3. I picked a different cultural background; Syria. They would have a very positive view of the website seeing how the Canadian Red Cross had helped refugees and migrants which might have helped someone they had known. So they definitely agree with my perspective on the resource. Since the civil war in Syria, many Syrians migrated to different countries. And Canada did help around 45,000 refugees!

Scientific Method Bubble Gum Lab

Conclusion: in summary, after observing part 1 and 2, our hypothesis should be refuted. Even though the hypothesis for part 1 was proven correct, the hypothesis for part 2 was proven wrong. In part 1, we hypothesized that Brand A (Hubba Bubba) would make bigger bubbles because it is thicker/stronger and won’t break as easily as it grows and will be more sturdy than Brand B (Big League Chew). According to our observations and measurements our hypothesis was supported as Hubba Bubba’s average bubble size was 17.6cm vs. Big League Chew’s average of 11.6cm. In Part 2, we hypothesized that the size of the bubble does relate to stretch ability size because the gum that blew the bigger bubbles will be stronger and stretch further. (Hubba Bubba would stretch further.) Then after observing and collecting data we came to the conclusion that if one brand of gum has a bugger bubble size than another Brand, it doesnt necessarily mean the stretchability is larger as well. Because if it blows a bigger bubble it’s because it is stronger and wont break as easily as the thinner, breakable but more stretchy gum. Hubba Bubba stretched 46.1cm and Big League Chew stretched 82 cm. There were many factors that affected the outcome of this lab, especially for part 2. I think Brand A was sitting, drying up before we stretched it vs Brand B that had recently been chewed. (Still soft/stretchy) Some other factors are -the ability to blow bubbles (experience). – The length of time that the gum was chewed while trying to blow bubbles. – Whether or not the gum was chewed for too long.- the chewers strength, how soft it got. And – the saliva of the chewer. The measurements of the bubbles and stretchability is described as quantititave and the observations like texture and appearance are described as qualititave. SI units were also used in the beggining of the lab to measure the weight of the gum in grams and to measure the circumference and length of the gum.
