In this assignment, we were asked to express our understanding of a piece of artwork and interpret what the author is trying to communicate with the viewers; I chose to express my understanding through a poem. The piece of artwork I chose to do this poem based on is called “Comments” by Steve Cutts. His artwork depicts how it feels to be constantly surrounded by other people’s negative comments; it reveals the reality of how easy it is to get consumed by other’s negative thoughts and opinions.

Consumed

Hanging onto a tightrope, barely hanging on
I stumble, I fall
They pull me down

They continue to pull me down
They continue to persist
I try to resist
But they try to persist

I ignore
I look the other way
But their comments follow me like a ghost
Their comments haunt my mind
I can’t let them go
I still hear their whispering comments
Lingering on my mind

Their comments take over me
They possess my mind
There is no escape

I have been consumed.
