Tech Team Quarter 1 Reflection + Core Competency

Tech Initiatives + Assignments

During this past term, I’ve participated in several volunteering opportunities. At the start of the year, I was involved in the Grade 9 Orientation as well as the Digital Bootcamp. At the Grade 9 Orientation, I spent 4 hours volunteering and helping with various things such as setting up the gym and handing out the packages to help the Grade 9s start their year. For the Digital Bootcamp, I assisted in helping the Grade 9s strengthen their communication, critical thinking, and collaborating skills through the spaghetti tower activity.

Throughout the year, I helped out at the Wave on Mondays at lunch, Fridays in the morning, and occasionally Wednesdays at lunch. I also took initiative to volunteer to make the library website for our school along with two other students. We would meet on Mondays, and plan out the layout, colours, and information for the website.

I gained skills and learned many things during this term so far. I learned how to use the Cricut machine for the first time, enhanced my social skills, and overall became more familiar with our school and its staff and students, allowing me to feel more confident in helping others and building a community. When making my Tech Team shirt, I faced a challenge trying to work the Cricut: my first trial resulted in my name not being mirrored. This was frustrating as I’ve already weeded it, but I knew I had to print it once more, this time ensuring that it’s mirrored. After fixing this small mistake, I was able to successfully make my Tech Team shirt!

Small wins I felt was when I was able to help others with my newly-learned knowledge. After figuring out how to work the Cricut machine myself, I was able to help my peer as well. I was also successful in assisting Grade 9 students at the beginning of year with their spaghetti towers during the Digital Bootcamp. After some advice on how to approach new Riverside students that was given by Mr. Gee to all Tech Team students, I was able to apply that advice and use it to make them feel more welcome.

Core Competency: Collaborating

My specific strengths include: being able to work collectively with my peers towards a common goal, having the ability to listen to others ideas while contributing my own, and overall knowing how to cooperate with others in a project. Regarding my stretches, occasionally there may be miscommunication between myself and my peers. This lack of clarity can cause a bit of conflict. An area that could use some growth is organization. My peers and I could work towards laying out a detailed and specific plan for the delivery of our ideas. Some goals I could implement in order to grow in this area is to practice strong communication by clearly emphasizing my ideas, then allowing my peers to emphasize theirs. After doing so, we can work together to decide our execution plan.

COL 10 Pokémon Mystery Element Cards

1. ABILITY EXPLANATION

IMAGE

Bromguard is wearing armour-like plates that resemble shields and has flames or charred marks on his design, a connection to how bromine is flame retardant and can resist fire. He has a metallic, reddish-brown body to reflect bromine’s colour and his design also includes misty or vaporous elements, representing bromine’s gaseous state.

“PURIFICATION”

My Pokémon’s “Purification” ability is based on how bromine can be used to purify water effectively as it dissociates in water by forming hypobromous acid (HBrO), which has powerful disinfectant properties and can kill the cells of many pathogens. I associated the element symbol HBrO with this ability because it is the symbol of the acid bromine forms during the purification process.

“FLAME RETARDANT”

My Pokémon’s “Flame Retardant” ability is based on how bromine acts as a flame retardant by releasing active bromine atoms into the gas phase before the material reaches its ignition temperature. These bromine atoms disrupt the combustion process by quenching the chemical reactions occurring in the flame, reducing the heat generated and slowing or preventing the burning process. The number that I associated with Bromguard’s flame retardant abilities is 19.7%, because it represents the share of brominated flame retardants in the global flame retardant market.

“WEAKNESS”

My Pokémon’s weakness is high reactivity and corrosiveness, with the corrosion symbol representing its corrosiveness and the bomb representing that bromine can be highly reactive, even without external triggers like heat or pressure.

2. AI IMAGE GENERATOR PROMPTS

It took me three prompt iterations to end up with my final image.

  1. generate an image of a pokemon style character that is related to what bromine is used for such as medicine or sanitizer or for flameproofing agent.
  2. generate an image of a pokemon style character and the image displays the character being a flame retardant
  3. generate an image of a creature called Bromguard in pokemon style with a metallic, reddish-brown body to reflect bromine’s color, with armor-like plates resembling shields. design includes misty or vaporous elements, representing bromine’s gaseous state. Also includes flames or charred marks on its design.

3. INFORMATION FLUENCY REFLECTION

ASK

The main questions I asked to drive my research were: “What is bromine used for?” and “What are the commercial uses for bromine?” These two questions led me to learn many interesting things about bromine such as its flame retardant and purification benefits. They were the leading questions to help me shape the information I had gathered into Pokémon abilities.

ACQUIRE

The main tool I used to do my research was Google. My Google searches would often lead me to Wikipedia, where I found the basic information about bromine such as its atomic mass and number.

ANALYZE

The primary method I used to verify the accuracy of the information was cross-referencing. I noted the details from one website and then compared them with 2-3 additional sources to ensure consistency. Regarding plagiarism, the task of presenting the information as though it were a Pokémon’s ability effectively required me to phrase everything in my own words.

ASSESS

I believe that my Pokémon card achieves Mr. Cornwall’s standard where the card must fool him for at least a moment if he were to pull the card from a pack. My card, including the element information, abilities, weaknesses, image, and visuals, is perfectly laid out to provide information about the element Bromine while also resembling an actual Pokémon card accurately.

1. ABILITY EXPLANATION

IMAGE

Platinumia is wearing metallic armour which represents platinum’s metallic resilience because armour is a symbol of strength and resilience and the armour is metallic, representing the metallic part in “metallic resilience.” She has jewel and crystal elements in her design to reflect platinum’s use for jewelry such as wedding rings. Her armour is also shiny and reflective, reflecting platinum’s shiny and reflective qualities.

“RADIANT SHIELD”

My Pokémon’s “Radiant Shield” ability is inspired by platinum’s reflective qualities. The number I associated with this ability is 60% because it represents platinum’s reflectivity in the visible spectrum, which is a measure of how much light it reflects.

“METALLIC RESILIENCE”

My Pokémon’s “Metallic Resilience” ability is based on how platinum is highly durable and corrosion-resistant. The number I associated with this ability is 1,768°C, which is platinum’s high melting point. This extreme heat tolerance contributes to its durability and ability to withstand harsh environments without degrading.

“WEAKNESS”

My Pokémon’s weakness is DNA alterations and cancer, because platinum is known to be able to cause DNA alterations as well as cancer.

2. AI IMAGE GENERATOR PROMPTS

It took me one prompt to end up with my final image.

  1. generate an image of a creature called Platinumia in pokemon style with a silver and shiny body to reflect platinum’s color, and with metallic armor. also add elements of jewels or crystals for platinum’s use in jewelry.

3. INFORMATION FLUENCY REFLECTION

ASK

The main questions I asked to drive my research were “What is platinum?” and “What is platinum used for?” These two questions helped me create my mystery card and led to me to discover essential information for the making of my mystery card including that platinum is used in jewelry and that platinum is a reflective liquid.

ACQUIRE

The main tool I used to do my research was Google. My Google searches would often lead me to Wikipedia, where I found the basic information about platinum such as its atomic mass and number.

ANALYZE

The main tool I used to verify the information I found during my research process was cross-referencing. I checked multiple websites and resources to ensure accuracy in any information I discovered before moving on. This assignment required information to be written as if it were a Pokémon ability, which ensured that I completed this assignment without plagiarism.

ASSESS

I believe that my Pokémon mystery card is well laid out, has interesting abilities and weaknesses that both relate to my element as well as a Pokémon character, and the image I generated looks convincing. Overall, I am proud of how it turned out and I think it would pass Mr. Cornwall’s standard where he must be fooled for at least a moment if he were to pull my card from a pack.

Electric House Project Solution Fluency

Group: Kara Huynh

DEFINE

When I was asked to define a problem in my house, the defect that I immediately identified was that it had missing doors. While I had made a cardboard door for the entrance of the house, there were no doors providing privacy and structure in between the rooms in my house such as the living room and kitchen as well as the bedroom and bathroom. Because of this, I have chosen to solve the deficiency of interior doors in my cardboard house for this project.

Bathroom and bedroom:

DREAM

The first innovative solution for my deficiency was a simple brown panel door design that had no doorframe or hinge system. This design had no structural support from a doorframe and would not allow my house to have functional doors that could open and close. For this reason, I decided to scrap this design and seek for a better design that would be able to function well as an actual moving door and would be an advanced, upgraded version of my previous design as I am aiming for a good mark on this project.

When designing my second innovative solution, I had the goal of creating a new door design that would be able to function like an actual door by having the ability to open and close. I achieved this goal by adding a door frame for my door and creating a hinge system where there were holes in the door and the doorframe and a long skinny cylinder would slide through those holes, allowing the door to open and close. Another improvement this new door design had was a curved side, which allowed for the door to open and close smoothly without facing difficulties that might occur with a sharp and pointed side rather than round and curved.

DELIVER

When my final project printed out, the hinge system did not work out as I hoped as the long cylinder could not fit through the holes. To solve this, I replaced the long cylinder with a wire instead. The final project printed out well other than the small problem with the hinge system that was quickly resolved along with just a missing door knob on one of the doors (I printed two doors). The doors were able to be inserted nicely into my house without issues and my goal of designing doors that can open and close was successfully achieved.

DEBRIEF

The process of this project was quite stressful because I was away for the days that we were given to work on it, setting me further behind the schedule and not being able to print on time. Luckily, I was still able to print my project with the help of a friend. The process was also especially stressful was because my original partnership for this project caused complications due to uncooperativeness, resulting in the decision to work on my own instead. Despite these obstacles, I managed to pull through and complete this project and also learn from it. While designing my door design, I was faced with challenges such as figuring out the measurements, sizing, hinge system, and more but it allowed me to demonstrate my problem solving skills and perseverance. If I was given the chance to do this project again, I would ensure proper sizing for my design such as the door size and the cylinder size. Overall, my experience while working on this project was very stressful while also being fun and beneficial, I enjoyed designing a solution for my house and learning how to work with a 3 modeling software.

English Honours 9 Poetry Project

In this assignment, we were asked to write a composition on a poem that we read in class. Then, we were asked to write a poem of our own. We were given the options to either write a synesthesia poem or a transformative poem. Lastly, we were asked to create visuals for both the class poem and our own poem using Canva or by drawing the visual.

Below is one of the poems we read in class as well as the composition that I had wrote about it. The class poem is titled “Mother to Son” and is written by Langston Hughes.

Here is the synesthesia poem I wrote titled “Roots Uprooted.” It is inspired by the inquiry question: “What are the consequences of an individual not pursuing his/her identity?”

Open-AI Film Posters and Narrative Project

In this COL/English Project, we were assigned to write an original short story focusing on one of the major themes that was covered in class during a short story unit. Next, we had to create a movie poster for our short story using a Generative AI website called Night Cafe to select the main image that would be used for the poster.

Here is my short story:

Four images that emerged from my prompt:
My prompt was: “a realistic looking 20 year old white man with black hair, brown eyes and broad shoulders wearing a long sleeved dark blue shirt and casual black pants standing beside a 20 year old white woman with brunette hair and green eyes with medium length hair wearing a fitted white t shirt and wearing casual light blue jeans. their surroundings is a futuristic city and has a hovering circular shaped vehicle in the background as well as a robot.”
