The Gap of Cultural Trends
One day, I was browsing for YouTube for songs to listen to while studying for my finals, and this question hit me, “why does it look like that I’m not up to trends of modern music?” And so, it led me to read this article. Interestingly, I found out that the author of this article is as clueless as me on modern trends.
The writer does an excellent job of describing the current status of popular trends, also jokingly exaggerating how people can get hooked on “Harry Potter,” stating that it’s only a “five-hundred-page literary works about a wizard.” (a hyperbole) Besides that, the writer also uses rich vocabulary (anachronistic, discourse, ethos, etc.).
In this article, the writer describes “the kinds of information” in three ways:
1) Information that you know you know.
2) Information you know that exists, but you don’t know much about it.
3) Information that you don’t know it existed and you know nothing about it.
The writer expressed that if this continues to go on (not following up to trends), his thoughts will get “outdated,” becoming a pterodactyl and getting “slain.” The way the writer portrays himself really relates to me, considering that I don’t use social media that often, to the point that I’ve never used Instagram or Twitter. Having our own individuality, style and taste is a good thing, but we shouldn’t forget that other stuff out of/similar to our interests also exist. We should come to realize that staying in our bubbles of “repeated interests” isn’t the best thing to be trapped. We should break out of it, as information these days is essential. We need to know what is happening in the world so that we can show care, and most importantly, to feel for things around us.
