HCE 9 – English Write

I chose birds on a wire, by Bankey for this assignment. I chose this photo because I think it’s a good way to show the racism that goes on daily in every country. In the picture, it shows pigeon like birds holding up signs saying “Go back to Africa”, “keep off our worms”, and “ Migrants not welcomed”. These pigeons are showing this sign to a smaller bird with more colours, which its homeland is Africa. Reading those things, I think that the “keep off our worms” infers that the pigeons represent the citizens of the country where people immigrate, they are saying something like; “stay off our land, don’t eat our food, don’t work, don’t take our jobs, etc…”. Another thing is that the pigeons were saying to the small African bird, “go back to Africa”, in real life events, people go through this everyday. A big place where this happens is the USA, towards Mexico. I am no huge expert on this, but throughout the years there has been so much racism towards Mexicans regarding immigrating to the states. So think of the pigeons like Americans, and the little bird as literally any people from foreign country. It’s unfair and most people have learned to be normal civilized people, helping immigrants instead of tearing them down, but there will always be a group of people that have problems. Last quick thing, this also ties into the racism that happens every day in the streets of the states (even Canada but less of it), regarding African Americans. Last year, with all the protests, there is always an anti-change group, who does not want equality and thinks they are superior because of their skin tone, or ethnicity.

3d settings – Street Pharm

For my novel study, I chose to read street pharm. A novel written by Allison Van Diepen, based on a young adult battling the struggles of being a drug dealer after his father gets sent to jail. The storyline is quite interesting and dark, definitely a more mature story. I based my Icogram picture on Sheepshead Bay high school, in a quote, the main character said “Big as Yankee Stadium, the school takes up a whole city block”. I also added a police car and a man running from them because the way the author describes the environment, it seems like a very dodgy area. He also refers to the school as a prison, saying it’s either a school or a prison because of the metal detectors. The emotional setting of the book is shady, dark, thrilling, and much more. I personally like the way the author uses the emotional setting, it makes the book feel a little bit more like things that could and do happen in real life.

Quote #1:
– “Sheepshead Bay High,. Population: thirty- eight hundred students, two hundred staff, and eleven security guards. Location: Avenue X, between Bedford and Batchelder. Big as Yankee Stadium, the school takes up a whole city block. As I walked through the metal detectors,” Page 9

Quote #2:
– “ I went with him to a run down apartment building in East Flatbush. It was a cold night in January, and I tried to keep my Jordans out of the slush as I got out of the car and followed him up the sidewalk” Page 27

Quote #3:
– “ We got off on the third floor, turning down a gloomy hallway. “remember watch where you step in there,” Dad said. “ There could be needles or cat crap on the floor.”” Page 27

Quote #4:
– “ Les chancellor was in a chewed up (and spit out) East New York hood. The grass in the front of the school was fended off, I guess because they didn’t trust people not to mess it up. When I went inside and saw the metal detectors and security guards, I knew I was at one of two places: a high school or a prison” Page 31

Quote #5:
– “ The air was smoky. The smell was sweat and perfume. K-Ron showing up made it official- this was the new hot spot.” Page 46

Quote #6:
– “ his shelves had fake-looking sports trophies, and the only thing on the wall was a poster of a runner crossing the finish line, arms in the air. The poster said: MOTIVATION + DETERMINATION = ACHIEVEMENT! The cheese made me wanna gag.” Page 52

Mitosis/Meiosis Stop Motion Project

1. Why did you decide to model Mitosis or Meiosis- one over the other? Be specific!!!

I decided to model Meiosis because I was working with a partner and we thought it would be better if we did the harder model.

2. What was the most challenging thing in making your movie?

Personally, I think that the hardest part of this project was communicating correctly, my partner and I disagreed on many things and a lot of time was wasted on that.  In general, I think my partner and I could both agree that using our time wisely was one of the most challenging things we had to do during this project. Even though we worked hard every class and went in on half days, our time was not used wisely and we shouldn’t have spent so much time on little things.

3. What was the easiest thing to do in making your movie?

Honestly, I wished that we made this project easier on ourselves. There wasn’t much that I would consider easy in our project. I guess I could say that the voice overs were pretty simple to do.

4. How could you improve your movie?

There are many ways that we could improve our movie, but for me one thing that stands out is not using candy to make the models. I thought it would’ve been different and fun if we did and that wasted 99% of our time. Another thing I could say is to not move around so much, we had a change of scenery a couple times during our movie since we had used all time in class.

5. Thinking about how you worked with your partner, what were some of the challenges and successes of working in a group?

This project had multiple difficulties for myself, and my partner. Like I said before, communication was a big thing. It was hard since I am not allowed to see people outside of school, so most of the planning was crammed into class time, or over text which is hard to communicate through. There were a few moments where we had disputes, but for the sake of the project, we ignored those and continued working. A success for our group would be the perseverance I would think. With the challenges we were faced with, I think our project is overall pretty well done considering I had to improvise at home.

6.  Why is Mitosis important? In other words, what is the point of cells performing Mitosis?

Mitosis is needed to duplicate cells quickly , which are needed for the growth and repair of the body.It is important that cells perform mitosis to survive and multiply.

7. Why is Meiosis important? In other words, what is the point of cells performing Meiosis?

Meiosis in important because it ensures that while going through sexual reproduction, the organisms have the correct amount of chromosomes. It also creates genetically diverse offspring instead of the offspring being identical to the parent.

Actinium

1) While doing research, I used the idea of each question and looked up on the internet, so I used the questions i was given to find my information.

2) I used a new website that i’ve never heard of before but we learnt about it during our class some time ago, it is called CC search. I used this website to find pictures for my sway.

3) First, I wrote down all the questions on paper, I then researched each question (some questions were found on the same website), and finally, I got pictures, started a sway, and added my information.

4) I looked at multiple websites, and every single one of them had the same information about my element, so I trust that it is correct since more than one site says that information.

5) I feel like it could’ve went better, I could’ve used more picture websites to expand my options. I also feel like i could’ve gotten more information with different websites, and I will try that in the future.

Core Competency

While doing health unit #1, we talked about stress, relationships, and more. A few things that I picked up while doing these lessons are to surround myself with good role models / people, to maintain a healthy sleep schedule, balance out healthy and unhealthy food, and how to know when i’m in a toxic relationship. It helped me realize some of the people i’m friends with might not be the best people for me to be around. It also helped me start eating better since I used to eat junk food everyday, and now maybe once every couple days.
