Effects of Confederation

1. Uncle Sam kicked out- I see this as showing canada kicking out usa. It shows that britan is happy and that they don’t need usa with them.

The situation- this shows how any colony or province can come to Canada and that it’s nice and very welcoming, but usa is very lame and boring and doesn’t have much wealth.

2. New brunswick- they didn’t like the confederation due to them wanting to be independent. This caused fights inside of new brunswick on canada day, which is supposed to be a day of joy.

Nova Scotia-

Ontario- they were upset that this was not voted on because they wanted a say in the confederation of canada.

Quebec- the liberals didn’t like it because theh wanted independence. The parti bleu liked it because they thought it would keep the francophone safe

3. Based on the readings it was not a good idea because not many people liked the idea and it made the provinces have fights inside instead of being one. I think that it was good later but not right away since people wanted independance.

Confederation conferences

Quebec conference-

1. Held in Quebec City on October 10, 1864.

2. No activities.

3. They agreed to a federal system. They also made the 72 resolutions.

  • Resolution 1: A union that is fair to all provinces have the best interests of British North America.
  • Resolution 3: The constitution of the new unions model will be the British constitution.
  • Resolution 17: Each province gets their own set seats in the House of Commons.
  • Resolution 29:Proposes the powers of the federal government.
  • Resolution 43: Proposes the powers of the provincial government.
  • Resolution 44: If their is a conflict between Federal Government and Provincial the laws from the Federal Government will void the Provincial laws.
  • Resolution 46: Both languages; English and French are to be used in Government.
  • Resolution 48: The House of Commons or House of Assembly originates all tax bills.
  • Resolution 52: The seat of the Federal Government will be in Ottawa.
  • Resolution 60: All debts of provinces will be assumed by the Federal Government.
  • Resolution 61-69: For differ met provinces to enter the union they will set certain conditions and incentives.

4. Being from New Brunswick I would agree with all of these resolutions because some of them wil benefit, or not affect my province in some sort of way.

Internal political problems

Double majority- this meant that the laws would almost never get passed since both canada west and Canada east had to get majorities for the laws to pass. It is very unlikely that both groups would have the same majority.

Independents- they didn’t have to answer to anybody. They could topple a government by voting against one of the bills.

Equal representation vs proportional representation- Equal representation causes larger population places to suffer because laws will affect lots of people not like in smaller populating where there is not many people to be affected.

Proportional is unfair for the small population because only large population areas will get their say on the laws.

External political causes of the confederation

1

Trent affair- the trent affair was caused when America captured 2 British and held them as prisoners. Britian threatened to attack America if they kept the prisoners. America let them go but this caused Britain to think that America might retaliate by attacking BNA.

St.Albans- confederate soldiers attacked st Albans using Montreal as their base. After the raid they escaped back to America. Britian arrested them and then released them. This made America mad that the British wouldn’t let them take their own people into custody.

Manifest destiny-Manifest Destiny was a belief that the United States was destined, by God, to control all of North America.

Fenian raids- Fenian was a brotherhood among Irish people who were in America trying to promote the liberation of Ireland from Britians control.

Britians feelings about the BNA colonies- they didn’t really care about the colonies anymore because they weren’t worth very much in resources and such and it was very expensive to keep looking after the colonies.

2

Due to these events the colonies should unite. Even though Britian is protecting them, most of the events that happened were due to Britian being involved. I think with them uniting they would also be strong enough against Americas attacks if they ever did decide to try to overtake them.

Why did the BNA colonies unite?

In the 1860’s both upper and lower Canada the economy wasn’t very good. But with the help of the railroads people thought that it would help the economy but it didnt. This was one of the reason that they united because the railroads helped people get around faster, but since it was 2 seperate colonies no train ran through both parts of Canada. The reciprocity treaty influenced the 2 colonies to unite because it was meant to help lower Canada by uniting with the states but why wouldn’t they just unite ALL of Canada with America. The corn laws made it that Canada’s economy would go down because there would be less profit in grain. So this is when they decided to unite canada ans make it one country so upper and lower could help each other out with their economy issues.

Why did the rebellion of 1837 fail?

The rebellion of 1837 was a disaster. According to one of the patriots, L.A Norton, their group had “no drill or discipline” and ” I do not believe there was a man in the entire company who even understood the manual of the arms. Mackenzie says that in Toronto they would have won, “but 800 ran where no one pursued, and unfortunately ran the wrong way.”. This is due to miss communication. Sydney Bellingham, a British soldier, explains in his paragraph about what the rebels did wrong. “The enemy fought bravely, but fired too high.” “After some of the rebels had fallen, several of their comrades threw down their arms and fled in all directions.” This shows that the rebels fought hard but just didn’t know what they were doing. Robert Marsh states in his paragraph that “through a misunderstanding in their leading men”. This clearly tells us that the only reason they lost was because of miss communication and their plan. The clearly were brave and strong enough but couldn’t organizing themselves in a winning fashion. Overal, the rebels should have won with their pure man power,  but just didn’t have the smarts to do that.

Problems in upper and lower Canada

2.

Rob Gourlay- Rob was a a land agent. He decided to do a survey on farmers about how their lives were in upper Canada. He was shocked to find out that no one liked the government’s way of doing things or their laws. So he decided to write up a list of everything they didn’t like and petition it to get a change. Gourlay got arrested and people decided to take what he was doing into their own hands.

William Lyon Mackenzie- Mackenzie was an argumentive man who disagreed with modern reformers. Mackenzie started a newspaper and published articles that criticized the government and the famity compact. Members of the compact then ransacked his office. Mackenzie didn’t stop the paper but he did sue the people who attacked him. He ended up getting voted into the legislative Assembly years later.

Louis Joseph Papineau- Papineau was the leader of the radical reformers. He later on became the leader of Parti Canadien. Papineau submitted 92 resolutions to the govenor. After 30 years of attempting political reform, Papineau ans his patriots rebelled against the government.

2. “Those near round me are well satisfied with their homes”

“That the colored people will have good farms here.”

The first quote is saying how the colored people are happy with their new homes in canada.

The second quote is saying that the colored people get their own farms and that they are good ones for growing crops on.

3.  In my project I will show a black person that final has a home and his own farm. This allows them to make money now for  selling the crops and to have freedom and make their own descisions. Also I can show that this is at the end of his life so the person will die happy with their own family, home, and land.

Underground railroad components

1. If they were travelling north, and they saw a slave trader, they would head south so it would look like they were coming from a job and going back to their master.

2. They sent themselves in boxes to the free state to escape their masters.

3. They would cover themselves in white powder to look like what people so they wouldn’t get caught.

4. They would also bandage themselves up so the slave traders couldn’t tell they were black.

5. They would pretend to be a slave and a master by disguising just one of the black people as white.

Far and Away

Absentee Landlords- Joseph’s father didn’t pay the bills and got the land taken away from him. When he died Joseph thought he would get the land but when he got there

Famine- in my movie the famine will be a reason to leave ireland. In far and away he leaves because he is angry with the house being burned down, and doesn’t want to keep being the low class.

Evictions- When the landlord came and told Joseph the land was 3 weeks late payment, the landlord burned down his house and kicked him off the land.

Womens roles- In the movie when Joseph was cleaning cothes, Shannon didn’t know how to do it. In America women are supposed to know how to wash the man’s clothes.

Coffin ships- When Joseph and Shannon wanted to go to America they had to go on a coffin ship. In the movie it didn’t potty it as well as it should have, since the conditions were much worse than what was in the movie. In my movie, the character might get sick on the ship since it was such horrible conditions.

Religious divide- in ireland, Joseph was a Catholic which was the lower class religion. If you were Protestant you were an upper class, like Shannon and her family. Also both groups hated each other because the upper class thought they were better than the upper class, and the lower class thought it was unfair that the upper class had so much more power.

British attitude towards Irish- When Joseph gets thrown out of the place he is staying in boston, he wants to get food and offers the man work for food. The man tells him he won’t hire Irish and he has a very mea  attitude towards joseph.

Protestant vs. Catholics- These 2 groups didn’t like each other due to the upper class being protestant, and the lower class being catholic. Thesee classes hated each other because of the class system and the lower class being treated poorly by the upper class, and the upper class thought they had a right to treat the lower class like crap.

Class- in the movie when Joseph goes to kill the land lord you see how much of a difference there is between high class and low class. The high class thinks of the low class as dirty. When Joseph gets caught he sees how much of a difference there s between the classes. The high class gets everything they want and can treat the low class terribly.
