Digital Footprint

  • How might my digital footprint affect my future opportunities

Your digital footprint is a way bigger deal than it sounds, even at a young age it is very important to make sure that you think, analyze and question what you post before it’s too late. Let’s list some examples, imagine you have just applied for your first choice of university and you have just got accepted. Suddenly, they send you an email stating that they have revoked your education and state that you will no longer be able to attend that school. At the end of the email there is a video of you from freshman year that you posted on your Instagram story of you saying some racial and sexiest slurs. The university does not want to enforce that and for that reason you couldn’t make it in. Even if you’ve matured over the last few years the university will not tolerate any sort racism or sexism. Things like that can happen if you are not careful with your digital footprint that you leave behind. This could even happen for a job that you want to apply for example, you go in for an interview, everything seems to be going smooth and at the end they say that they will send you a confirmation letter to see if you got the job. The person who interviewed you searches your name on google and finds out that in the past you posted a video on YouTube of you that the interviewer would not like to say in public and for that reason you couldn’t get the job. Finally, this can even happen in politics for example you are running for mayor for your city and your campaign is going even better than you expected. It is the day where everyone is going to vote and you and your team feel very confident but just before people start voting the other person who is trying to run for mayor against you suddenly leeks a tweet that you tweeted when you were in college about how the LGBTQ community should have their own college and should not be welcomed in that college you attended. Because of that tweet you lost the campaign. Even though you completely changed and support the LGBTQ community because of that one tweet that came back to haunt you, your dream of becoming mayor was ruined.

  • What are three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint safe and appropriate

In my opinion I think that my three strategies are very simple but also very effective. The first one is to take a second and reflect on what you are about to post, is it appropriate, will some people of different race or different gender get offended and finally my favorite can you show this to your parents. The second strategy is to analyze, try to think in 10 years if the thing your posting will make you start to think what you were doing ten years ago, or will it make you remember some good memories. Finally, the last one is the affects, try to think how this can affect you now as a student and in the future when you’re looking for a job or university, will it come back and haunt you. Guess we’ll find out.

  • My information and advice

My advice to the others would be simply to try and understand the consequences of your actions, whether it be for the better or the worse. Try and visualize what can happen if what your about to post is available for the entire world. It’s simple when you think about it, just don’t be dumb and if you are, there is no need to share it.
