Gandalf’s quote states that “great power’ is not what can cause significant changes, but rather it is the “small everyday deeds” that have the most impact. The essay “A South African Storm” has a parallel message with this quote through examples of the writer’s life in South Africa. It may seem like a small gesture, but everyday actions such as walking alongside “the people” are the ones that have the most impact. Governments can attempt to ban racism by putting in new legislation and rules, but that will not stop everyone from continuing to be racist to others. The quote and the essay suggest that small acts such as one working to eliminate racism is much more powerful than that of a government with grand political agendas. We often doubt our ability to make a change, but every action we take will have an impact even when we do not realize it. Our small, individual contributions as a society, for society, will allow to make genuine progress.
