The discussion on the short story “Ms. Brill” made me contemplate about the very challenges we face as a society even to this day. It provoked the thought that our words can have a negative impact on someone else’s life. The truth that surfaced during this short story is that if a person is out of the social norms, it is very easy for that person to be singled out and excluded from society. This is apparent in the short story because Ms. Brill was excluded since she was old, yet single and poor. In the timeframe that this short story takes place, those were out of the ideal standards that society put on. Due to this standard, it caused the young couple to talk lowly about Ms. Brill’s age and her presence at the park. Subsequently, those words affected Ms. Brill’s day and caused her to go back to her single bed apartment. We take for granted the power our words possess. It can build up one’s day, or tear it apart. This is still extremely relevant today because bullying is very prevalent in our schools and society. As a high school student, I witness bullying and people talking down on others every day. This short story humbled me because it made me realize the impact our words can have on others around us. I strongly believe it is crucial for us to utilize their words as a tool to inspire, empower, and enable the people in our lives.
