Identity. It defines us and allows us to have a sense of belonging. Striping one’s sense of belonging is against human rights. Culture, beauty, and art sculpts one into the person they are. Assimilating their right to have an identity is the biggest crime in my opinion. After all, without identity, life is not worth living. If I had no ambitions, dreams, and aspirations in my life, I wouldn’t know what to do with my life. Like what’s the point of even showing up to school without identity? Nothing would matter without it. So the government remove the identity of First Nation people is absurd. They are JUST like us; they have beliefs, aspirations, and goals just like us. So for us to take that away from them is crazy. If you put yourself in their shoes, you might understand what I am saying. If the First Nations took everything away from the settlers that came after the First Nation people, that would be unacceptable. But stereotyping First Nations people and making profit from incorrect costumes with feather hats and inaccurate traditional dresses is cultural appropriation. Redskins, Indians, drunks? Proud, strong, independent. The past is the past, but I strongly believe we can learn from our mistakes and re write our history. Appreciation of the First Nation’s beautiful culture is our one step closer to equality. I believe we must drop the racism and prejudice actions against the First Nations people and start embracing them just like they are regular people. Because they are regular people.

Yes, they are. And recognizing the stereotypes is just one step to reconciliation.
