When I was scrolling through to find the perfect article to write on, the title “How I learned to Value the Simple Things in Life” drew me in as if it wanted to teach me to appreciate life. The article was talking about how we think that only significant events will bring happiness and joy into our lives. Instead, the article states that little moments in our day-to-day lives are what truly makes us happy. This topic interested me because it got me thinking about the importance of the infinitesimal events that occur every single day that we take for granted. I enjoyed the writer’s descriptive style because it allowed me to connect to my life. For example, the writer mentioned that we should “embrace and celebrate the small. The meal delivered to a sick friend, savouring a lazy Saturday morning in pyjamas…” The writer recognized the power that connections have on readers and utilized it to enrich her writing. Coincidentally, I made a connection with a quote from class with the article. The writer quoted Gandalf’s quote “Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I’ve found. It is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay.” Although the context was taken in different ways, I made a universal connection with the narrative piece “An African Storm” with this article. The narrative piece, Gandalf’s quote, and this article all suggest that it is the infinitesimal acts in life that have the most impact, not the big events that we expect to have the most impact. From this article, I learned that the very essence of life is what leads to my happiness. We shouldn’t waste our time “waiting for the thing” that will make us happy, but enjoy the moment for it will bring pure happiness and contentment.
