Safety First Cheat Sheet

Fire:

Do not panic. It is important not to panic because panicking leads to misjudgment. Hit the “STOP” button beside the entrance to the class. Exit out of the doors beside the fire extinguisher if the fire is not containable with the fire extinguisher.

Burns/Scalds:

Run the burned area under running cold water as it will reduce the burn from residual heat.

Chemicals:

Do not mix two different chemicals together as it might create toxic gases that could be fatal such as CO2.

Slips/Trips/Falls:

Make sure that food and oil that has dropped to the floor is wiped up immediately as it is a slipping hazard.

Cuts:

Do not run under running water as it might get infected. Apply pressure to the cut until further assistance is available.

Heavy Lifting:

Do not lift with you back! Keep your back straight and bend your knees down to pick something up as you might get a back injury from bending your back over.

How to Prevent Food Poisoning:

If you touch raw eggs or meats, wash your hands immediately after handling them as it might lead to food poisoning or cross contamination.

Waste Management:

Make sure the compost is as emptied out as possible, as it will attract fruit flies and other bugs.

Personal Hygiene:

Make sure your hands are washed before any lab, as germs can get onto the foods and ingredients.
