Climate Solution Fluency

Define:

Climate change has become one of the biggest challenges we face today. Over the years the world have been facing warmer temperatures, rising sea levels and losss of sea ice all resulting from climate change. One of the most leading climate change factors are human activities such as burning fossil fuels. Burning fossil fuels adds the amount of Carbon Dioxide, a greenhouse gas, being released into the atmosphere.

The problem we are trying to solve is finding out the exact chemicals emitting out of factories and decreasing the amount of fossil fuels being burnt in factories as well as lowering the amount of carbon dioxide being released into our atmosphere.

Discover:

As we know, factories contribute to the amount of carbon dioxide being released to our atmosphere but we also found out that other harmful gases emit out with carbon dioxide. These harmful gases contributes to the formation of acid rain. Acid rain is a chemical reaction that happens when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide are released into the air.

Sulfur dioxide is composed of sulfur and oxygen. This gaseous air pollutant forms when fuel such as coal, or diesel is burned.

Not only do factories release sulfur dioxide into the air, through research, we also found out that electrical utilities contribute with sulfur dioxide being released into the environment.

Dream:

  • Campaign for trees
  • Create something that can take carbon out of the atmosphere
  • Finding the best alternative for fossil fuels (nuclear power, solar power etc.)
  • Creating a device that can stop carbon dioxide going into the atmosphere
  • Changing the electrical utilities in the factories to be powered by solar energy
  • Turning carbon dioxide into fuel
  • Creating something that can help conserve energy

Debrief:

In this challenge, our main goal was to find out how exactly factories are harmful to our environment by finding out what emits out of factories. My process of define, discover and dream went smoothly as I was able to define my problem with detail, I was able to cite my resources, and lastly, we were able to create ideas from the information we had discovered. Regarding our product, I am satisfied with the drawing as it shows how we want our dream product to look like. Something I think I could’ve done better is researching more about my problem as I think I was lacking in the discover portion.

  1. Excellent explanation of how you used the solution fluency to address a problem important to you. Great work discovering solutions to your issue and sharing the sources of your research. You included very effective media showing what your solution looks like. Awesome job. How could the knowledge you gained with this approach help you in the future? What are the disadvantages of solar power that might keep people from converting to solar energy?
