Artifacts of Learning

During my Science 9 course, our class focused on 4 main subjects: chemistry, physics, biology, and Earth science.

Chemistry:

During the beggining of our semester our class focused more on safety and the scientific method before we went in more in depth in the periodic table and the elements. One of the units in chemistry was safety during labs and the understanding of the scientific method. We focused more on these units in the beggining as we had our first lab a week later. We were to understand the rules and regulations during labs and to gain the knowledge on how write a proper lab reflection. Our first assignment in the safety unit was to write a safety story. After our first couple labs, we moved on to the periodic table. We learned the history behind the periodic table and the elements. Later on we went in more in-depth by learning the groups and features of the periodic table and later on we picked our own element to research in the periodic table and made a sway presentation on the element.

Physics:

Our second unit was physics. For this subject we focused more on electricity. We learned about the history behind it as well resistance, voltage, and current and how it ties around the Ohms law. We gained the skill to read resister colours, the voltmeter and ammeters. We learned from series and parallel circuits to making a complete circuit and to light a bulb. One big project we did for physics is the currents from the kitchen lab. The purpose of this lab was to figure out which fruit will produce the most electric voltage. During this lab day, we were able to use the voltmeter to figure out our purpose.

Biology:

For our biology unit, we learned about DNA, the making of ribosomes, asexual and sexual reproduction, animal and plant cells, mutations, meiosis and mitosis. Biology was one of the most busiest unit of all as there were many subjects we learned and the most knowledge I have gained. One of the projects that I still remember is the asexual reproduction superheroes. We were placed into groups and each member picked an reproduction to research and put together a superhero team. This project was very fun to do because we were able to use our resources and the knowledge we gained and used our creativity to create a superhero. Another assignments include edible DNA, modeling mitosis and our meiosis project.

Earth Science:

Our last unit was Earth science and for this unit we focused more on climate change and how we can define a problem and find a solution to it. Two projects I remember is the Climate in Canada and the Solution Fluency.  The purpose of the climate in Canada assignment was to research a part in Canada each of us were assigned and draw a picture explaining the carbon cycle. The solution fluency focused on how we can define a specific problem and used the 5 D’s to solve this particular problem. These two projects helped us gain a better knowledge understanding the effects of global warming and how we can make a difference.

All of these units we covered in science all relate to Catherine Nakabugo and her condition in Uganda and her school for girls. On June 14, 2022 we had a skype chat with Catherine and asked her questions concerning her problems in Uganda. Discussing with Catherine, we discovered that the difficulties growing up in Uganda include effects on climate change and education, poverty and the amount of water in some parts of Uganda. With the knowledge I have gained over the semester some solutions I can offer the Catherine is the usage of asexual reproduction for farming to somehow create more of a successful farming year. All of the knowledge I have gained through this semester can help me in the future as I still have much to learn.
