Physical

It was an enormous pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete, soaring up, terrace after terrace, 300 meters into the air. 

a world of steel and concrete, of monstrous machines and terrifying weapons

 there seemed to be no colour in anything 

Emotional

His heart leapt. Scores of times she had done it: he wished it had been hundreds—thousands. Anything that hinted at corruption always filled him with a wild hope
