week 4 – Negative exponents

]

During the week 4 in math, we learned how to convert a negative exponent to a positive exponent.

To convert the negative exponents to positive, you have to put the number in the denominator.

so what I did in example c, I moved the number 2 with negative exponent 5 to the numerator that makes the negative exponent to positive and solved it.

When both numbers have the negative exponents you just flip both sides to make it positive.

week 3 – powers with whole number exponents

During the week 3 in math, the class learned about the exponent laws.

product law – when you are multiplying the same bases, you add the exponents together.

quotient law – when you are dividing the bases, you subtract the exponents.

power of a product law – when you have 2 bases in one bracket you muliply both bases by  the same exponent.

power of a quotient law – when you have a fraction base with the exponent, you multiply both denominator and numerator by the same exponent.

power of a power law – when you have a power in a bracket with another exponent, you multiply these 2 exponents together.

week 8 – polynomials

  • During this week, we started the polynomial unit.Although most of them  looked familiar from what I’ve learned from grade 9, I still got  to know a lot of things about polynomials.

We learned about monomial(1term), bonimial(2terms), trinomial(3terms), polynomial(4 or more terms), degree of a monomial- the sum of the exponents of its variable and degree of a polynomial which is the degree of the term with highest degree.

We also learned how to add polynomials and multiply a polynomial by a monomial by drawing tiles and by using FOIL. FOIL stands for –

First term in each bracket, Outside terms, Inside terms, Last term in each bracket. – (a+b)(c+d) = ac+ad+bc+bd

    ex.- (x+6)(x+4)= x^2

    x^2 + 4x + 6x + 24

    =x^2 + 10x + 24

week 7 – trigonometry

During this week we started the trigonometry unit.

We learned how to label the sides of the triangle with hypotenuse, opposite, and adjacent as well as SOH CAH TOA to find the angle, and the length of triangle – sine= opp/hyp  cos= adj/hyp tan=opp/adj

We also learned about the angle of elevation which you measure the angle upwards from the horizontal and the angle of depression which you measure downwards from the horizontal.

Week 2 – Entire Radicals and Mixed Radicals

During the week 2, we learned how to convert entire radicals to mixed radicals and mixed radicals to entire radicals.

To convert the entire radical to mixed radical, first you have to find the highest perfect square and the factor. Second,  divide the perfect square and then remove it from the root and write down the factor of the perfect square beside the square root.

For example – To convert the entire radical of 45 to mixed radical, you have to find the perfect square& the other factor of 45 which is 9&5. Divide 9 by 3 and remove it from the squreroot. Leave the number 5 because it’s not a perfect square. Write down number3 beside squareroot of 5 and it becomes mixed radical.

Converting the mixed radical to the entire radical, It’s pretty simple and easy compared to converting the entire radical to the mixed radical. You just have to multiply the coefficient by itself and then multiply it by the number inside the square root.
