Canada prepares for war

1. In the world war 1, Canada automatically entered the war when Britain declared war on Germany. But after the world war 1, Canada became more of an autonomous country and was no longer obligated to fight for Britain. Although Prime Minister Mackenzie King was willing to support Britain once Britain gets  involved in such a major conflict, the decision to join the war needed to be decided by Canada’s Parliament.

2. BCATP – British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, a program to train pilots and aircrew during the Second World War; it produced half of all Commonwealth aircrew and is the largest air training program in history.

C.D Howe’s total war economy – Howe was given extraordinary authority to do whatever it took to gear up the economy to meet wartime demands.  He told industries what to produce and how to produce it. Under Howe’s leadership,  the government ran telephone companies,  refined fuel,  stockpiled silk for parachutes,  mined uranium,  and controlled food production.

3. Although Canada itself had a choice to join ww2 or not, majority of canadians were still loyal to Britain and decided to support Britain and declared war on Germany.

” King’s position on joining the war was supported by  the opposition  Conservative  Party.”
