The equation I’m going to be solving is: -0.11(3a+5) = 0.37(2a-1)
Step 1 to solving this equation -0.11•3a = -0.33a 0.37•2a = 0.74a
is to distribute the number outside -0.11•5 = -0.55 0.37•-1 = -0.37
the parenthesis to the numbers inside
Step 2, once you have your equation -0.33a-0.55 = 0.74a-0.37
rewritten you need to isolate the variable. +0.37 +0.37
To do this I started by adding +0.37 on both sides . = o.18
Now I’m left with the equation -0.33a+0.18 = 0.74a
Next I added -0.33a on both sides +0.33a +0.33a
I’m left with +0.18 = 1.07a as my new equation
Step 3 is to divide 1.07a on both sides so I’m left 0.18 = 1.07a
with just the variable on the left side and a new ____ ____
number on the left 1.07a 1.07a
My final answer is -0.17=a
After solving an equation it’s important to verify the solution. To verify this, I’m replacing the “a’s” in the equation with -0.17 because that’s what “a” is equal to.
-0.11 [(3•-0.17)+5] = 0.37 [(2•-0.17)-1]
0.056 -0.55 = -0.13 -0.37
-0.494 = -0.5
If both numbers on both sides of the equation sign are equal, then you know that -0.17=a is true.
Once I round -0.494 up to the closest decimal it will be equal to -0.5
I chose the results of US favourite music genres of 2014.
Rock seemed to be the most popular music genre with a lead of 7% more than the next. The second favourite was oldies with 33% of the population that voted. They found these statistics by looking at how many physical copies were sold, but later in 2016 they looked at the genre of songs people were downloading on their devices and noticed that hip hop or rap has taken the lead. I think the influencing factor is bias because they only checked the physical copies that were being sold at the time, this influenced the 0utcome of this poll because the majority of people that purchase cds are the older generation. They should’ve also analyzed the digital downloads and purchases of music because now a days thats what people use to listen to music.
In my opinion I think that statistics play an important role in our society. We use statistics in almost everything, like media, our jobs, laws, school and sports. We base a lot of our opinions on what these statistics say. We always seem to believe these statistics even though they could be lying and fooling us.
From reading this article, I believe that statistics can improve many things in our society. For example drinking and driving, when people are aware of the statistics of how many car accidents are caused by driving under the influence of alcohol, they become more cautious with their decisions. Having real evidence and numbers to prove something is a more persuasive way to convincing someone than by just telling them.
In almost all statistics there are at least 1 influencing factor, which will affect the outcome and numbers of the statistics.
When I first read the article about the Nova Scotia Sunday Shopping Referendum I thought it was very biased, considering the people who took the survey are most likely ones who work in retail and would prefer to have Sundays off. I think that they should still be able to shop on Sundays, but all stores should only be open for a short amount of time, in case if anyone really needs to buy something. After learning about the influencing factors, I still think that it is bias and the timing of it may have an effect on the peoples answers. If the survey were to be taken a few weeks before Christmas, I think the votes would be different. In the future when interpreting survey data I will make sure to think of the influencing factors and their effects on the outcome of the survey.
Something I enjoyed from this workshop was how it was a different approach to learning about Shakespeare and his poems. It was very interactive which made it fun. I learned about the play and Shakespeare’s type of writing style, also how to act.
In science 9 we have learned many things that involved connectedness. Interconnectedness is the belief that everything in our universe is related/connected. Whether it be through family, a nation, regions, plants, animals or cycles. This theme relates to things we’ve learned about the food chain. How it starts with the producers, all the way up to the tertiary consumers, then to the decomposers. Every level of the food chain is necessary and all the levels need to connect to one another. If a level of this chain were to disappear the whole chain would be broken, thus the importance of interconnectedness. Another example is what we learned about water cycles, carbon cycles, etc., they are all being repeated in their cyles and are interconnected in a way. These cycles are very important components to our ecosystems and if one of the components in a cycle is affected it could damage them all. By learning information like this, we are now able to recognize the consequences of ones action if we were to do something to affect the food chain or the cycles.
Learning involves recognizing the consequences of one’s actions.
Sustainability
Sustainability is to have the endurance of system and processes, it’s to maintain a good balance between multiple things at once. It also means how we can sustain and keep our environment healthy to pass down to the future generations. This principle is involved in many things we have been learning throughout science so far this school year, for instance, how we affect the environment and in the electricity unit where we had to find a better alternative that uses less energy like hybrid cars or solar panels. We recently just learned a lot about how humans are affecting our ecosystems and environment, like how much pollution we are letting out in the air and all the fossil fuels being burned. We also leanred that we can all help the environment if we make an effort to conserve by recycling, green wasting and taking shorter showers. From learning how much humans are damaging the planet we can now take responsibilities and try to improve in the ways we treat it so it is sustainable for the future generations.
Learning involves generational roles and responsibilities.
