Adding and Subtracting fractions

For my visual representation of adding and subtracting fractions I did 3/5 and 1/2.  First I found the common denominator which was 10.  I multiplied the 3 and 5 by 2 to get 6/10 and then 1 and 2 by 5 to get 5/10.  I then cut my apple into 10 pieces.

For .my addition I added 6 apples out of 1o and then 5/10.  Which gave me 11/10 because 6 + 5= 11

Then, for my subtraction I started with 6/10 apples and then took away 5/10 apples. This subtraction gave me 1/10 because 6-5=1.

Nice visuals, Jenna. It would be effective if you could somehow show the 3/5 and 1/2 as parts out of the w hole. Your explanations made your pictures very clear.
