UNIT 2 -Lesson 1 -A Virtual viewing of a Vancouver Art Gallery Show – Shuvinai Ashoona

I want to take you to the Vancouver Art Gallery.  If we were in school we could go for a field trip.  Instead we will have to travel to the show virtually.

There is a pretty amazing and different artist showing her work there right now.  For this unit of study I ask that you learn about one of Canada’s influential and current artists because she has ideas and ways of making art that you will gain expertise and amazement from.  Her name is Shuvinai Ashoona.    Shuvinai lives and makes art in Canada’s north, She can’t use paints because they freeze, so she is amazing with pencil crayons.   Right now her work is showing at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Shuvinai Ashoona was born in Kinngait, Nunavut (formerly known as Cape Dorset). Shuvinai is part of Canada’s Inuit culture and comes from a large family of artists.  Please take a virtual tour of of Shuvinai’s home area, Kinngait in Nunuvut and then answer the 10 questions (below) about the area.  To “travel” there with your computer here are a couple of sites to look at:
