Throughout Canadian history the attitude towards First nations has improved. Originally settlers came onto the native’s land and did not accept them, First nation people were sent away to reserves and seen as not Canadian. Because the First Nation people spoke out and continued to fight for what they believed in, we now recognize that we are on first nations territory. I think that Canadian history and the attitude towards First nations shaped their identity because no matter how much the early settlers wanted to colonize or remove them, they never gave up and fought to keep their land, they fought to be recognized. Now Canada is a more diverse place and cultural identity is more widely celebrated. The First People of Canada shaped this in a big way, whether it was known at the time or not. Had they given up and left to go somewhere else Canada’s history and what we see today may have been very different. First Nations are considered Canadian and many Canadians are proud to recognize the territory and land.
