Mendelian Traits – Ectrodactyly

Ectrodactyly is also known as split hand or cleft hand.It is a rare inherited form of a congenital disorder which results in an absence/deficiency of one or more of the central digits. It can also occur in the foot which is known as split foot malformation.

The most common way it is inherited is autosomal dominant with reduced penetrance. The affected parent then has a 50% chance of passing this disorder to the child within each pregnancy. The more rare occurrences of inheritance are autosomal recessive and X-linked. Ectrodactyly occurs varying from 1 in 90,000 to 1 in 10,000 births. The variation in the amount of births is caused depending on the used classification. Ectrodactyly can be treated surgically to help with appearance and function. In some more severe cases prosthetic may be used.
