Key Question: What would an ethic of care towards the environment look like?
- What would be needed to create it?
- What would we have to believe about the environment? How should we see it?
- How would we act? – give scenarios
- What would be different about the world if everyone adopted this ethic of care towards the environment? Benefits and drawbacks?
- Should we adopt an ethic of care towards the environment?
- We would need to be aware of the environment and the willingness to respond and take action.
- We would have to believe that the environment was being damaged and have proof that it is being damaged.
- We would act differently depending on what cause of the damage is. For example, if we wanted to eliminate global warming, then everyone in the world would have to take action by using less electricity, less fuel, etc… to reduce our carbon dioxide production.
- The benefits would be that we would have a much cleaner and healthier environment. The drawbacks would be that we might have a less convenient ways of living. For example, we might’ve completely gotten rid of cars to get rid of carbon dioxide production and that means we would have to either walk or bike to places.
- I think we should adopt an ethic of care towards the environment because we depend on the environment to survive. In order for us to be healthy, we need the environment to be healthy too so we should care for our environment.
Yes, the damage part is similar to us seeing that nature is in some sort of need, then we might decide to care.
Sounds like we’d be doing less if there was an ethic of care for the environment.
Remember from our examples in class that if we truly cared, inconveniences won’t matter. Maybe we have to get to that point.
