3D art 10

Week 1,Feb 1. 2023 Making an Edublog page

This week we made our edublog page, went over how the class works, and got a short tour of the classroom. My biggest struggle this week was probably just getting to class. My biggest success this week was figuring out what type of things I would like to create in this space. My goal for next week is to start making some art.

week 2, Feb 9th 2023, making sgraffito tiles

this week we worked on our sgraffito tiles, talked about our inquiry projects, and research on an upcoming assignment. My biggest struggle this week was carving out my design onto my tile. The tigers didnt transfer too well, I still managed to successfully carve them though, so I’d say it was my biggest success this week. Next week I’d like to spend my time a little wiser, I think Ive been a bit all over the place recently.

Life below water project

lake strugeon, located: Canada, from Aberta to St. Lawerence drainage Quebec. Lake strugeons are currently threathened by overfishing, invasive species, and pollution. As of now there are four factors contributing to overfishing; unsustainable fishing, harmingful fishing gear, bycatching, and illegal\unreported fishing. We can protect\ help protect the lake sturgeon by spreading awarness regarding overfishing, donating to ocean cleanup projects\ communities and participating in volunteer work.

Inquiry project

-Sketchbook

For my inquiry project, I’d like to work on my sketchbook and challenge myself by trying to finish it. Ive been drawing tradionaly for a really really long time, but I’ve only ever filled one sketchbook, and a very thin one at that. I’ve seen a lot of artits do challenges where you have to finish a sketchbook in a week, I want my project to be a bit like that but with a longer amount of time of course. The idea behind this project is to somewhat let go of expectations; with a time limit theres only so much detail you can put into one page. Simultaneously, I do wanna explore some new subjects\medias\ textures in the book. The main idea is really just to have fun, and have a book I can recall different times of my school year with. I dont believe there are many issues I may run into with this project but art block\ losing inspiration is definetly a major one, switching mediums is for sure a good way for me to avoid that. For example, maybe im getting tired of painting\drawing portraist, I could create a collage instead. (below are some pages that are already in my book)

Plants vases \cups

Another inquiry project I’d like to do is make plant vases. I currently have some plants in my room, and plan to get more in the future. Right now I have one that growing out of the cup its in, so I want to create a new home for it. As for the other cups, I’ve got art supplies lying around my room that also needs a more convienient home. I can definetly see myself running into problems since this isnt something im familiar with, But I can ask questions, preceed with caution and carefully plan out my project.

Week #3 February 16th inquiry and tile

This week I worked on my inquiry project, finished carving my design onto my sgraffito tile, planned my design for my monster mug and began working on it. My biggest struggle this week was getting used to carving, it felt a little weird at first. My biggest success this week was definetly my inquiry. Usually I used refrences for my sketchbook but for the two pages I did this week I didnt, and im still really happy with the results. My goal for next week is to finish my tile and continue working on my mug.

Week #4 February 23rd finishing my tile and starting a monster mug

this week I worked on my monster mug, and finsihed my sgraffito tile. My biggest struggle this week was probably adding details to my monster mug. The biggest sucess was finishing my tile, I like how it turned out. My goal for next week is to finish up adding details for my mug and get back to working on my inquiry.

Week #5  March 1st monster mug progress

this week I spent all my time scuplting my monster mug. My biggest struggle this week was scuplting the expression on the distressed looking side of the mug, but it was also very fun. My biggest success was the faces on the mug i like how both dies came out quite a bit. My goal for next week in definetly working on my inquiry, I havent worked on it in a while now.

Week #6 March 9th a little bit of everything

this week I got my monster mug painted, started creating my lake sturgeon for the life below water project and finsihed two sketchbook spread for my inquiry. My biggest struggle this week was making the lake sturgeon, I had to redo it the first time. My biggest sucess this week was my mug, I like the colors I chose, and had fun painting it. My goal for next week is to finish my monster mug and get the lake sturgeon painted if I have time.

Week #7 March 30th  Art competion, monster mug, lake sturgeon

this week I worked on my monster mug, my lake sturgeon, painting my art competion submission and learned a bit more about color theory. My biggest struggle this week was my lake sturgeon (theres no picture because its in the kiln <\3) the fins broke a couple time so it took me a while to get those fixed. My biggest sucess this week was getting my mug done (almost) and out of the way. My goal for next week is to do some inquiry for sure, and finish up my competition submission. ( I ended up doing a tiny bit of inquiry on friday)

Week #8 April 6th Finishing my art submission

this week i finished my art competition submission, and worked on some inquiry. My biggest struggle this week was finishing my submssion. Usually, I never work on the same piece for more than two days and or two sittings, so working on this piece for the past month was a huge struggle. I found it becoming less and less fun the more I worked on it but regradless, im still glad I finished it. My biggest success this week was my inquiry. I had a lot of fun working on it here and there as I was finishing up my submission. I explored working with some old newpapers and magezines to create interesting spreads and add texture to the book. I also did some quick figure study practice, focusing on creating a loose and expressive impression rather than accuracy. The study was very fun. My goal for next week is to finish my lake sturgeon, I havent worked on it at all since we’ve gotten back from the break, so now that I’ve gotten that contest out of the way its very important that I put all my time into the fish now.

Week #9  April 13th Lake sturgeon

this week I worked on my lake strugeon and some inquiry (kind of) My biggest struggle this week was getting the color of my lake sturgeon correct. My biggest success this week was the writing on my sketchbook- I really just did homework in my sketchbook but it looks nice and I like it so yay me. My goal for next week is to finish my lake sturgeon if I havent already by the end of this week, get my artist statement done (I forgot about it TT) and get working on a new idea I had for an inquiry project

Life below water scult and paint: Lake sturgeon

the Lake Sturgeon is found in the rivers of the Hudson Bay basin, the Great Lakes basin, and their major connecting waterways, including the St. Lawrence River. The Lake sturgeon is the oldest and largest species in the great lakes. All 24 species of sturgeon in the world including the lake sturgeon, are at risk or endangered. The species is currently threatened by overfishing, invasive species, and pollution.

Out of these many threats, overfishing is the largest. In this piece I wanted to incorporate this issue using a wire net. I felt it would better emphasize the problems the lake sturgeon faces. As of now there are four factors contributing to overfishing; unsustainable fishing, harmful fishing gear, bycatching, and illegal\unreported fishing. We can protect\ help protect the lake sturgeon by spreading awareness regarding overfishing, donating to ocean cleanup projects\ communities and participating in volunteer work.

Week #10, April 20th  lake sturgeon and house decor

this week I finished my life below water project, my artist statement and lot sof house decor (doll size) My biggest struggle this week was writing my artist statement. Ive been meaning to do it all week while also avoiding it completely. Whenever i sat down with the intentions of doing it my mind would go blank. My biggest success this week was all the furniture for my doll size house. I managed to make all the furniture within the span of two days, I thought it’d take me much longer. Im really happy with the pillows and blanket\ the color scheme. My goal for next week is to get started on my mask, I havent even got my idea for it down yet. I also wan tot do some inquiry, if I can.

Week #11 April 28th Mask and inquiry

This week I worked in my sketchbook, on a new painting, and started the base of my mask. My biggest struggle this week was my painting. I started making it as a gift for my mom, and the hardest part of it was figuring out what exactly I wanted to paint. Then I recalled the numerous times she’s asked me to do a painting of black women and the rest came easy. My biggest success this week was the spreads did in my sketchbook. The first one was a spread I made while binge watching a show I loved as a kid. Watching it now as a 16 year old was intresting It made me realize I was a pretty aware child- The scenes I saw as kid and believed to be weird were the same scenes that I now know are sexist and flat out….strange. I also noticed my favorite character at the time- and to this day actually- was very quite and unproblematic. Its nice to know I had taste as a child. So depsite those few moments I still enjoyed taking myself back to such a nostalgic place and decided to draw a few of the characters. (I would talk about the other spread but this is getting long) My goal for next week is to get my mask done and out of the way. It feels like the year is reallllyyy running by, and I had a lot of ideas that for my inquiry that I still want to do so I’d like to finally use my free time for 3d art inquirys for once.

Week #12 May 3rd Mask, Painting, Sketchbook

This week I worked on my mask, a painting for my mom and my sketchbook. My biggest struggle this week was getting the hang of making my mask. At first I didnt really know how to start\ achieve what I was picturing. My biggest success this week was the painting. I really like how it turned out and so did my mom. My goal for next week is to potentially finish my sketchbook…? and get some papper mache on my mask.

Week #13 May 11th Working on my sketchbook

This week, all I did was work in my sketchbook. My biggest struggle this week was doing my work- I was super burnt out, so I haven’t come to school like- at all. I only went to art club after school on wednesday. My biggest success this week were the spreads I did- even if they were created due to procrastination, I still really like them. I’m also on the last page of my sketchbook now. My goal for next week is to just get my mask done and over with.

Week #14 May 18th Mural, Sketchbook, Mask, art competition submission

This week I worked on the mural on the back of the school, My new sketchbook, My mask, and an art competition submission.(I ended up dropping the idea of entering another competition which is also I dont have\ didnt take a photo of it) My biggest struggle this week was getting to class, again- I just want school to end already to be completely honest. My biggest success this week was working on my mask again and actually invovling myself with the art club projects. Im not the best at particpating, I usually keep to myself but I went and worked on the mural this time and it was actually really fun. My goal for next week is to start painting my mask.

Monster mug process

In my original design I wanted to my monster to resemble a bear, But instead when I was sculpting it ended up looking more like a pig. I thought it looked cute so I decided to just let the my hands take the design wherever. I did think about adding the ears at the top of the mug to reinforce the bear like features but quickly realized this would made it a bit uncomfortable to drink from. the idea I had in the draft was to have one side be cute and the other be graphic and creepy but as I was making it it kinda of changed to one side being cute and a little creepy, and the other side looking creepy and graphic. I feel like I could do better in terms of the creepier side, but im really proud of the cute one.

Week# 15 May 23rd Animal mask, Mural, Sketchbook

this week I on worked on finally begining to paper mache my animal mask, some gouache painting in my sketchbook and the mural on th eback of the school in art club. My biggest struggle this week was my animal mask, I really struggled getting the shape of the eyes with papper mache. My biggest success this week was my sketchbook, I didnt use any references for the painting and used only the primary colors to mixed the skin tones. I feel like my understadning of paint and color theory is started to evolve. My goal for next week is to dedicate all if not most of my time to finishing my mask.

Week#16 May 31st Animal mask, sketckbook, edublog

This week I worked on my animal mask, my sketchbook and editing my EDUBLOG. My biggest struggle this week was uploading all my sketchbook pages to my EDUBLOG there was a lot and I wanted to organize them, so it took me a while. My biggest success this week was my sketchbook I did a lot of planning in it recently I’m liking the way the pages look my goal for next week is to finish up all the process and product posts for my blog

Week #17 June 8th facepaint,

This week I did face paint at the riverside carnival. My biggest struggle this week was showing up to class. I dont htink I went once. My biggest success this week was the face painting, it went surpirsingly well. i was painting from start to finish and the results for each one were really well recieved. My goal for next week is to work on my mask

Week #18 June 15th sketchbook and animal mask

this week I worked on my sketchbook and my animal mask. My biggest struggle this week has been getting to the painting phase of my mask. It feels like ive been doing the base foreverrrrr. That and doing some real spreads in my sketchbook, I havent had the time recently. My biggest success this week has been my mask, although I havent started painting, ive been working on it and shoul dbe able to start doing the painting tomorrow.

MONSTER MUG PRODUCT

Title of work: Two-faced
Medium: ceramic
Date: June 9th 2023 (completed March 30th 2023)
Artist Name Jannai Johnson
The idea of this project was to create a mug inspired by monster, incorporating texture and expression. It needed to have somewhere to drink from, be food safe, and be leak proof.
For my mug, I decided I wanted to do something somehwat inspired by a stuffed animal\ plushie. I wanted it to be cute and unsettling at the same time. I worked with both ideas in mind, adding in clay sculted at buttons and making two seperate expressions. The soft colors I planned on using and the idea of the mug being inspired by a stuffie kind of  made me think of baby toys, with that my mind wandered as I was in the middle of sculpting sharp teeth. I ended up taking the teeth out and adding only two small ones. I thought having the teeth look like they were premature harminized with the other themes of the mug. Not long after though, I found myself wanting it to be more gorey, and used red underglaze around mouth to give a very different impression. The impression that the teeth had been pulled out.

INQUIRY PROCESS

I did’nt really give myself any strict guidelines for this project, But I did have a few goals. I wanted to learn a bit\ improve on environments\ landscapes building, adding texture to my book, and learning to do gouache portraits. I definetly improved A LOT with the gouache portraits, like a lot a lot. but in terms of backgrounds and lanscapes… I for sure culdve pushed myself more.

INQUIRY PRODUCT

Title of work sketchbook #2
Medium 2D, pencil, prisma colors, gouache, cardboard, etc.
Date: started august 14th 2022, finished May 21st 2023
Artist Name: Jannai Johnson
My idea was to create a colorful book, filled with studies of people, food, and artitechure I also wanted it to be stuffed to the brim with other meduims, and interactive pages. I did end up adding a lot of extra things into the book but near the end I found myself wanting to make more personal peices, and illustrations to test my abilities rather than just doing studies. I feel like I learned more about the way skin works, and how to paint it. i also felt some development in my abilities to draw\paint plants. I also feel I learned a bit about myself, flipping through the book is kind of like reading a story, for me at least. Because the speficifc pieces are connected to different moments in my life. When I look at some of the spreads I start thinking about different people, places, songs, foods, smells, games and emotions, its really cool.

Week #19 June 22nd, Animal mask, collaborative maitenance, my sketchbook, a project from another class (art involved)

This week I worked on my animal mask, the collaborative maitenance project, my sketchbook, and another project. My biggest struggle this week was the collaborative maitenance project. Getting the space cleaned was easy, but i kept forgetting to post and answer the question on my edublog. The fact that I accidentily pressed the turn in button without realizing didnt help- out of sight out of mind… At least I remember now- My biggest success this week was my animal mask, Im finally getting the aquatic details on it and im really loving the way its looking. My goal for next week (I week) Is to finish up my mask and work on the mural.

Collaborative Maintenance

Studio maitenance Identification

Glue gun area, space used to plug in glue guns for use. Glue guns, used for gluing crafts together they’re very messy, theyve got glue and other stuff stuck to them. (feathers string paper cardboard) glue sticks, specific type of glue used and designed for glue guns, currently all over the counterspace. Counter space, usually used to place items are theyre being glued. Very messy, lots of dust, items some of which do not even belong in the area spread along the surface, tons of dried hot glue stuck to it. Brsuhes and others, brushes are used to paint, the other tools are used for clay\sculpting. They’re all in the wrong place. All items should be in their approiate spot. Glue guns should be clean, their cords gently and neatily wrapped around the body, and placed in their bins. Glue sticks should be in their bin. Counter space should be regularly cleared and kept after after every use.

Division of Tasks and Process

Channel and I worked together to get things in their proper place. She get all heaps of glue off the guns by heating them up. I carfeully got the tons of glue off the counter with an exato knife. Together we then flipped the card board in the counter, then measured in cut a new square for the outlet.

Completion of Maintenance

Now, theres a clean and easy to work with space, with no potential items to fall or get caught anywhere while the space is being worked in. Because this is a high traffic area in the room, theres also no possible tripping hazzards now that the space is cleaned. Having a tidy area to work in can contribute to the motivation to work\ want to do work, for me at least. Its nice to have an organized space(s) to work in.

Animal Mask Process

Originally, I wanted my deer\fish to have a warm color pallete, but later I found these light blue glass stones, and wanted to use them for the eyes. Because of the change in eye color, I decided to change the intail color pallete and go with some cooler tones. The biggest struggle for me was starting, getting the base down was fun but hard. I made sure I kept a refrence photo of a deer during the process to guide me. The other struggle was the ears, very quickly I realized that forming them out of cardboard would be too difficult and opted for wire and tape. I used the wire the shape and spine of the ear, then went around it with tape. Honestly i think the tape was a good call. The texture of the particular tape I used was a nice replicaton of the texture, and thinness of the skin you’d see in a deers ears.

Photographs of your process are required. You should have at LEAST 3 photos of the PROCESS per week  (not just the finished project). You should also be posting in your Edublog journal weekly reflections.  If you made changes to your original plan, why? Have you had any struggles? How did you adapt?
