Holocaust Memoir

“JEWS OUT, JEWS OUT!”, a Nazi soldier yelled out as the Jews rush outside to avoid the whips. Many of them are too weak to stand up, so they fall, but it never stopped the whips and the horde as they trample over their fallen friends and families. The Germans claimed that it is for the good of the fatherland, but after hearing the mournful Jewish child’s poem, I’m starting to think otherwise.  I used to think that the Jews were sinful creatures, but what I am seeing now concludes that it is the complete opposite. I started giving food to Jewish families whenever Nazis are not around. I knew what was at stake; my life, my career, my family, but I digressed because I could not tolerate Nazi oppression any longer. I went to a barrack and gave a piece of bread to a child. “I could not get my hands on more of this, but it will do for now”. “Thank you very much”, the child said and hurried off to his family to share the bread. The next day, I had a bag that allowed me to hold more bread. Upon arriving in a barrack, I saw the family from yesterday. I see soldiers with their belligerent faces. “They stole food from us, they deserved more than pain”, the soldier said. One of them notices me, “What are you doing here, go out there and make sure that you break the soul of every Jew in this camp, so that this mess does not occur once more”, one of them exclaimed. I left the room and did nothing for the rest of the day. As I walk home, I could feel the warm tears sliding down my cheeks. The next day, I heard a Nazi soldier yell the same four words each day, “JEWS OUT, JEWS OUT!”. The Jews wake up from their cramped bunks and struggle to walk out of the barracks. I stand before the camp with no bag, no food, and no hope.

Analysis:

This fictional memoir is based on World War 2 where Nazis began conquering countries, and started establishing concentration camps for Jewish people. This was written in first person and is seen in the eyes of a Nazi soldier who opposes the Jewish ideals made by his kind. There were many struggles that existed in this story such as struggling what to believe about the Jews, and helping the Jews at the cost of his life. I tried to show that people that there are always choices. Those choices were always yours and it defines who you are, but sometimes, it is best to do nothing than something.
