Before the winter break, the teacher bestowed upon her students a project that must be completed during the aforementioned holiday. This became a struggle for some students as they tried to find time to work on the assignment. The challenge was mediocre to me because I could find time to work on it for a little while and there are times where I couldn’t. Above is my project which I completed after overcoming plenty of struggles that some considered to be minor pet peeves, but were major dilemmas for me. The project presented a lot of challenges for me.
One of them is the shading of the shapes in desmos because some of the equations were complicated to be shaded in, so I left the shading out in some of the shapes. Another problem in this project is the functions because initially, I did some form of a draft of my functions and despite working, I decided to organize it due to my intolerance of chaotic work. Most of this peeve is focused on the letters because initially I used random letters for functions and eventually decided to change it the letter corresponding to the shape for example, I used n for the letter “N” in my card and so on.
Another problem was forming the shape of the face because of how complicated it is. The shape of a face consists of at least two functions which presented a challenge to me when working on this project. I scrolled through various equations which took hours, but eventually, I was able to find the ones that best suited my figure.
I couldn’t tell if I had an Aha moment or not in doing this project, but I do know that upon finishing this project, I did a little bit more research on desmos and discovered a gallery filled with images using desmos. All of them were spectacular. It was at that point that I realized that even simple Grade 12 equations can create beautiful pictures and that I saw another entertaining side of Mathematics.
In this project, I received help from my teacher before the winter break. She provided help when I needed it during tutorials. She helped me figure out how to shape the hat by applying two functions instead of one to make it look more visually appealing because of its complexities. My colleagues were also able to provide help. They were able to help me run through the basics of this project which became beneficial later on.
As for strategies, one of them is putting a lot of folders about specific shapes such as head, eyes, mouth, etc. at the beginning of the project because it becomes organized and that it ensured that the functions I created were at the right place.
I didn’t really learn something new in this project since my teacher already taught most of the components that I needed to finish the project. However, this project became beneficial to me because it allowed my memory of transformations and functions fresh in my mind which would help me a lot towards the upcoming final.
