Science 9 – energy production

Part 1

Aspects of energy production

Some benefits of using electricity is when we produce and use electricity more efficiently, it reduces both the amount of fuel needed to generate electricity and the amount of greenhouse gases. So therefore, there is less greenhouse gases which makes the air less polluted. Another good thing about it is we can reuse it and make it renewable. The benefits of this is it can create jobs, improve the public health and save money. The disadvantages of this is that it can sometimes not always be a constant source of energy, it can also cost a lot and the main one is just low efficiency in general.

Statement to Justin Trudeau

I think that energy production is a good thing because it has a lot of advantages like having a healthy public and less pollution in the atmosphere. But some complaints that I would have is that the cost can be very high and hard to afford for some people and that it is not always a reliable source of energy. But I think that those things can be fixed with enough dedication.

Part 2

  1. Some question that I needed to ask myself were things like why I chose to put these advantages and disadvantages because they needed to be valid so people like the president would agree with me.
  1. The process I used to investigate the topic was to research and learn about the good and bad things of energy production therefore giving me decent points to my research.
  1. The way I verified the site was that I made sure the points they gave me made sense and were valid to me to be able to use, I also made sure that the site wasn’t sketchy and full of adds.

The biggest moccasins in the world – flip book

This is my flip story about the biggest moccasins in the world, I explain the story more In depth and give more detail.

circle reflexion

  1. How can one learn through oral communication? Someone can learn through oral communication by listening to what the person has to say because they are wise in their own special way and then they can proceed to learn by comprehending what the person has said and even possibly use that knowledge In life. A core competency that someone can use is communication, they can use this by saying what they feel and sharing with others.
  2.  How did this exercise build community in this room? I think that the exercise helped us connect trust and respect each other because we were in an open environment were you can feel safe and not be judged by your opinion so you can therefore share what you feel. A core competency that someone can use is social responsability by contributing to the activity and building more friendships within the circle so we can become a more connected community.

A fresh look at the periodic table

Define

We think that the problem is the shape of the periodic table in general because it`s kind of all over the place, so we can fix it by doing several things.

Discover

Some questions that we have are how would we re do the periodic table and make it look better all together and how much do we need to change. How would it affect people who haven`t memorized it yet and will it affect them for the better or the worst. We are wondering why the periodic table was designed that way because if we change it we are wondering if it will make a difference.

Dream

Some information that the periodic table tells us is that it`s kind of unorganized and It can be set up much better. We think that we can arrange it better by putting it in the shape of a spiral, such as putting the metals on the outside then the metalloids and finally the non metals on the inside. We also think that we should change the colour of the metals to red colour and the non metals to blue and the metalloids magenta.

Design

We decided to put it in a spiral shape so it would look nicer and more put together and to change the colours so they make more sense to us because the colours that we had used before were kind of confusing.

Picture –

These are some examples of the elements we used –

Deliver

We started off by colour coding the different elements and cutting them up into single pieces, then we took them in numerical order and glued into a spiral on a separate piece of blank paper and finally we added the elements that are on the bottom to the side of the spiral.

Debrief

In the end everything went pretty well because we had a well formed plan to follow and it ended up being successful. Things that we could have done better is adding more detail to our plan and adding a legend, but we decided not  to add it.

Community connection

I choose a family friend who is a nurse for my interview because I might want to become a nurse as a possible career. Her name is Linda Blanchette and she is 65 years old and is very passionate about her job and works hard.

Connect –

Why are you passionate about your job?

She is passionate about nursing because her job is challenging, diverse, interesting and has an element of excitement and drama, she never may know what might happen next. But mostly, she is passionate about her job because she feels she makes a different in her patients lives, however big or small that may be.

What obstacles have you faced to get where you are today

The obstacles she had faced are…

  1. The fear of the unknown
  2. She was a stay at home mom
  3.   She had feelings of doubt – For example, knowing she was 30 years old, could she successfully go back to school again.
  4. Education – she was one course short for her high school diploma, so she went back to school and competed grade 12 biology In order to meet the requirements for a high school diploma.
  5. Children, she had two children and she had to provide care for them while she was in the nursing program.
  6. Money was tight, so she had to obtain a loan to pay for the nursing program.

What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?

The advice that she would give to anybody considering a career in nursing, is to ask yourself, do you really have a genuine interest in nursing? She would advise to research and familiarize with the nurses role. Talk to nurses in order to have a better understanding in what they do, volunteer in a hospital or community setting in order to see nurses In action. Furthermore, take all non nursing courses such as math, English and biology while waiting to enter the nursing program, thereby allowing yourself to focus on the actual nursing program.

Would you be open to further contact from Riverside students and if so, how can someone contact you?

She is open to further contact and can contact her through me.

What was the hardest thing about your job that you had to do?

The hardest thing about nursing is working short staffed and taking on additional patients, One of the hardest and most frustrating aspects of nursing, is to not be able to provide the unhurried compassionate care people deserve because, management failed to provide the number of nurses required for the workload. She finds It difficult to look a patient or their family member in the eye and say ”sorry I didn’t have time to sit with you”.

Where did you work and how long?

She worked at Surrey memorial hospital in various departments for 20 years then she worked at Eagle ridge hospital on the high acuity unit for 6 years.

Why is your job important to you?

Her job is important because it gives her financial independence, self satisfaction and a feeling of accomplishment.
