The short poem “Alone” was written by Edgar Allan Poem. The theme of the poem that is loneliness. The speaker feels lonely from his childhood until now. The reason why does the speaker feel so rejected because he sees life in different viewpoint with others. He seems that the source of his feelings is different from most people. Treating the world in a way that is very different from others creates a strong sense of alienation. Meanwhile, there also have some poetic devices used in this poem. First one is parallelism in the “As others were; I have not seen, / As others saw; I could not bring” (2-3). In these two sentences, they both start with “as others saw” the construction is same. The second one shows in the fourth line “My passions from a common spring” (4). There has two metaphor which is “passions” and “spring” which meaning of his emotional life, and a source respectively. Here is talking about the source of the speaker’s passion, his emotional life. The things that make passion explode in most people are not the same as what makes the speaker burst into a passion. Of course, everyone has an interest in some things, but the thing what he curiosity to is always unusual from others. The third one is end – rhyme which shows in “My heart to joy at the same tone;/ And all I loved, I loved alone” (7-8). The words “alone” and “tone” end sound is the same. The last one is a personification, its uses in “From the lightning in the sky, / it passed me flying by” (17-18). At here, the author is given human characteristics to the lightning. From this poem, we also can see how important a child’s childhood is. It is the dark side of this world that the speaker sees since he was a child that makes him increasingly unable to communicate with people and integrate into the society. Even in a beautiful and healthy world, what he sees is always the dark side. The childhood of a children needs to be full of warmth and beauty so that children can have a beautiful future.
