Bio 11 – Kingdoms

1. Archaebacteria

Methanothermus fervidus is an example of Archaebacteria. They belong to this group because of their ability to survive under extreme heat in its home of the Icelandic hot springs. They can withstand temperatures as high as 97 C.

Methanocaldococcus jannaschii is another example of Archaebacteria. They belong to this group because of their ability to survive under extreme heat and because they use carbon dioxide and hydrogen as their main energy sources. They live in places such as the base of a chimney on a submarine.

2. Eubacteria

Helicobacter pylori is an example of Eubacteria. They belong to this group because it is the cause of 80% of the stomach ulcer’s throughout the world, but mainly in poorer countries. Helicobacter pylori is found in the human’s gastrointestinal tracks.

Escherichia coli is another example of Eubacteria. They belong to this group because they cause food poisoning in humans.

3. Protists

Paramecium is the first example of Protists. They are part of the protists kingdom because they live in either large freshwater areas or in oceans.

Diatom is another example of Protists. They belong to the protists kingdom because they are unicellular and they are found in rivers, lakes and oceans.

4. Fungi

Sarcoscypha coccinea is an example of Fungi. It is found on the decaying wood of several different plants. It belongs to the fungi family because of its role as a decomposer.

Amanita rubescens is another example of Fungi. It grows mainly in soil and is located in western North America. It belongs to the fungi family because the decompose organic substances and return nutrients to the soil.

5. Animalia

Pterophyllum altum is an example of Animalia. They belong to the animalia group because their organs are internal and they are multicellular. You can find them in rivers in Southern Venezuela.

Coccinella septempunctata are another example of Animalia. They live in North America. They belong to the Animalia kingdom because they have eukaryotic cells and they have internal organs.

6. Plantae

Taraxacum officinale is an example of Plantae. It grows in wet grounds such as moss and is considered a weed. It is a part of the Plantae kingdom because they reproduce asexually by cell division.

Vaccinium macrocarpon is another example of Plantae. It grows in North-America in places such as cranberry bogs. It belongs to the Plantae kingdom because it has an autotrophic way of nutrition.
